Description

Sine Qua Non Midnight Oil 2001 is one of California’s most sought-after cult Syrah blends, made in tiny quantities and built with the intensity and polish that have made SQN legendary. Crafted by Manfred Krankl from fruit across some of Santa Barbara County’s most respected vineyards, it captures both Rhône-inspired character and unmistakable California richness. It also marks an important chapter in the rise of Sine Qua Non, a winery that helped redefine what ultra-premium American Syrah could be.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Midnight Oil 2001 shows a deep, nearly opaque black-purple color with remarkable density and concentration. The nose is hugely expressive, offering violet and acacia florals, blackberry, crème de cassis, melted licorice, camphor, and subtle toasted oak. The palate is powerful yet layered, with a viscous, almost oily texture, ripe tannins, and well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine focused. It finishes with striking length and persistence, leaving a dark-fruited, spicy impression. While already impressive, this is a wine with serious aging potential and should continue to evolve beautifully over many years.

Production
Midnight Oil 2001 is a blend dominated by Syrah, with small amounts of Grenache and Viognier, sourced from four notable vineyards: Alban, Stolpman, Bien Nacido, and White Hawk. These sites in Santa Barbara County contribute a mix of ripe fruit, aromatic lift, and structural depth, shaped by California’s warm sunshine and cooling coastal influence. Production is extremely limited, and the wine reflects Sine Qua Non’s hands-on, detail-driven approach to farming and vinification.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that pairs best with richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb shoulder, venison, braised short ribs, or rosemary-scented roast poultry. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and dishes with black olive, pepper, or smoky spice elements. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant for at least 1–2 hours, especially if opened young, to allow its aromatics and structure to fully unfold.

Producer
Sine Qua Non, founded by Austrian-born Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, has become one of California’s most iconic cult producers. Starting in 1994 with just a few barrels of Syrah, the winery quickly gained international attention after Robert Parker awarded its early wines exceptionally high scores. Today, SQN is known for its Rhône-inspired blends, tiny production, artistic labels, and waiting-list demand, cementing its status as one of the most influential names in modern American wine.
