Simonsig Frans Malan Cape Blend 2021 is a distinctive South African red that brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinotage in a polished, characterful blend. Named in honour of Frans Malan, the visionary founder of Simonsig, it reflects both the estate’s pioneering spirit and the signature style that has helped define South African wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet hue, hinting at the concentration within. The nose offers ripe blackcurrant, plum, and dark cherry, layered with notes of spice, cedar, and a subtle earthiness from the Pinotage component. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied with supple tannins and a balanced core of dark fruit, savoury spice, and gentle oak complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, Merlot adds softness and roundness, while Pinotage contributes a uniquely South African depth and dark-fruited edge. It should drink well now, but will also reward a few years of cellaring as the components continue to integrate.

This Cape Blend comes from South African vineyards where warm, sunny days and cooling influences help preserve freshness and natural balance. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified separately before blending, allowing each variety to contribute its own character. The final wine is typically matured in oak to build structure, texture, and complexity while preserving the fruit-driven style.

Food & Serving
Serve this wine with roasted lamb, grilled beef, slow-cooked game, or richly flavoured dishes such as beef short rib and mushroom risotto. It is best enjoyed at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes can help open up the aromas and soften the tannins, especially in its youth.
