Description
Silvio Morando Grignolino Bio 2023 is a vibrant, naturally made red from Piemonte that gives this often-overlooked local grape the spotlight it deserves. Where Grignolino is frequently dismissed as pale and simple, Morando’s interpretation is anything but: it’s light in colour yet full of character, energy and rustic charm. Certified organic and crafted with a minimalist, hands‑off approach, this wine offers a fresh look at one of Piemonte’s oldest native varieties.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grignolino shows its classic, almost translucent, light garnet-red hue, sitting somewhere between a delicate red and a deep rosé. The nose is immediately inviting, with pure, bright notes of red berries – especially raspberry and redcurrant – supported by subtle hints of wild strawberries, delicate floral tones and a faint whisper of dried herbs.
On the palate, the wine is strikingly lively and agile, with a crunchy red-fruit core and a mouth-watering, sapid freshness. Fine, lightly grippy tannins frame the fruit without weighing it down, giving a pleasantly rustic texture and a clean, dry finish. The overall impression is one of lift and drinkability rather than power, making it an ideal wine to serve slightly chilled. While this Grignolino is crafted for immediate pleasure in its youth, it has enough acidity and structure to drink well over the next 2–3 years, gaining a touch more complexity while preserving its vibrant fruit.
Production
Grown in the rolling hills of Piemonte, the Grignolino vines for this cuvée benefit from a classic Piedmontese mix of calcareous-clay and marl soils, which help to retain freshness and emphasize aromatic purity. Azienda Agricola Morando Silvio farms organically, working the vineyards with respect for biodiversity and minimal intervention, and harvesting is typically done by hand to ensure only healthy, ripe bunches are selected. In the cellar, Morando follows a low‑intervention, natural-wine philosophy: native yeasts are used for spontaneous fermentation, and the wine is vinified with minimal oenological additives and gentle extraction to preserve the grape’s naturally pale colour and expressive aromatics. Sulfur additions are kept low, and the wine is usually bottled unfiltered or only lightly filtered to retain its authentic character.
Food & Serving
This light, energetic red is wonderfully versatile at the table and particularly well-suited to traditional Piemontese fare. It pairs beautifully with salumi, vitello tonnato, simple tomato-based pastas, grilled vegetables, and lighter meat dishes such as roast chicken or pork. Its bright acidity and delicate tannins also make it a great companion to pizza, charcuterie boards, and even flavourful fish dishes like tuna steak or grilled salmon. Serve at 14–16 °C, slightly cooler than a typical red, to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief splash in a carafe for 15–20 minutes can help the wine open up, but extended decanting is not necessary.
Producer
Azienda Agricola Morando Silvio is a small, independently minded estate in Piemonte, known for its willingness to champion local, often underappreciated grape varieties. In a region dominated by Nebbiolo and Barbera, Silvio Morando has deliberately chosen to swim against the current, dedicating time and care to historic grapes like Grignolino that once played a far more prominent role in Piedmontese wine culture. Working organically in the vineyards and with a decidedly natural approach in the cellar, the estate has built a quiet but solid reputation among enthusiasts who seek authenticity and terroir-driven character over polished uniformity. Morando’s wines, including this Grignolino, are regarded as honest, expressive interpretations of Piedmont’s heritage, helping to restore respect for varieties that might otherwise have been forgotten.
