Description

Silvio Morando Clandestino is an intriguing red from Piemonte that shines a spotlight on Grignolino, one of Italy’s most characterful and delicately structured native grapes. Bottled in an elegant 0.5L format, it’s perfect for sharing over a meal or enjoying across a couple of courses without opening a full bottle. This wine stands out for its light color, aromatic complexity and finely etched tannins, offering a very different experience from the fuller-bodied reds commonly associated with the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clandestino typically shows a pale, translucent ruby hue with garnet highlights—classic for Grignolino, which is naturally lighter in color despite its firm structure. The nose is lifted and engaging, with notes that often recall red cherries, wild strawberries and pomegranate, layered with hints of dried rose petals, white pepper, subtle herbs and a gentle, earthy undertone. On the palate, expect a dry, vibrant red with high, mouthwatering acidity and fine but noticeable tannins—more elegant than rustic, giving the wine a tactile, savory grip. Flavors echo the aroma: bright red berries, a touch of cranberry, and a faint spice that lingers on a clean, refreshing finish. While Grignolino is generally best enjoyed in its youth for maximum freshness and perfume, a few years of careful cellaring can add nuance and soften the edges of the tannins.

Production
Azienda Agricola Morando Silvio is based in Piemonte, where Grignolino thrives on hillside vineyards with well-drained, calcareous and clay-limestone soils that help preserve acidity and aromatic finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of the thin-skinned, delicate clusters, which are prone to uneven ripening if not carefully managed. In the cellar, Grignolino is usually vinified as a dry red with a relatively gentle maceration to avoid excessive tannic extraction, followed by maturation in inert vessels or neutral wood to preserve its bright fruit, floral notes and characteristic lightness. The goal is to express the purity and authenticity of the grape and terroir rather than oak influence.

Food & Serving
Clandestino’s light body, bright acidity and fine tannins make it a versatile partner at the table, particularly with classic northern Italian fare. It works beautifully with antipasti, cured meats, vitello tonnato, grilled vegetables, mushroom dishes, simple tomato-based pastas, roast poultry and lighter pork preparations. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatics. Decanting is generally not necessary for this style, but a brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or carafe can help the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic range.

Producer
Azienda Agricola Morando Silvio is a family-run estate rooted in Piemonte, a region renowned for its wealth of native grape varieties and distinctive vineyard sites. While many producers focus primarily on Barolo and Barbaresco, Morando Silvio places a strong emphasis on characterful local varieties like Grignolino, helping to preserve and promote the region’s broader wine heritage. By working closely with their vineyards and favoring attentive, small-scale production, the estate aims to craft wines that are honest reflections of their origin—wines like Clandestino that offer authenticity, drinkability and a clear sense of place in the glass.
