Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2018

Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2018 is one of Napa Valley’s true benchmark Cabernets — a wine that has earned legendary status for its concentration, depth, and power. Made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the steep hillside blocks of Shafer’s estate, it reflects both the pedigree of the vineyard and the long-standing reputation that helped put Shafer on the map.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inky color that hints at what’s to come. The nose is profoundly aromatic, opening with dark plums, blackcurrant tart, cassis, anise, nutmeg, and a lifted floral note of rose petals. On the palate, the wine is dense and layered, repeating the dark plum and blueberry character from the bouquet and building with pomegranate, licorice, crushed stone, tobacco, sage, and a subtle smoky edge. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, with the structure and intensity to age beautifully for at least 20 years, and likely much longer under ideal cellar conditions.

Production
Hillside Select is sourced from 14 small estate parcels planted on the slopes surrounding Shafer’s vineyard in Napa Valley, where hillside exposure and well-drained soils contribute to the wine’s concentration and elegance. The 2018 vintage was vinified by winemaker Elias Fernandez and matured for 32 months in 100% new French oak, adding layers of polish, spice, and complexity while preserving the wine’s powerful Cabernet core.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavored dishes such as prime rib, dry-aged steak, lamb chops, venison, or slow-braised short ribs, as well as hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if opening young, as the wine benefits from aeration and time to fully unfold in the glass.
