Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2015 Magnum

Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select is one of Napa Valley’s most coveted Cabernet Sauvignons and a true icon of the Stags Leap District. Produced exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon grown on 14 hillside parcels, the 2015 vintage combines remarkable concentration with the depth and refinement expected from Shafer’s flagship wine. Presented in magnum, it is especially well suited to extended cellaring and memorable occasions.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured, this spectacular Cabernet opens with an intense bouquet of dark plums, blackcurrant tart, cassis and anise, complemented by nuances of nutmeg and rose petals. The palate is powerful and layered, echoing the dark-fruit character of the nose while adding blueberry, pomegranate, liquorice, crushed stone, tobacco, sage and subtle smoky notes. Despite its formidable concentration, the wine retains balance and energy, with a persistent, long-lasting finish. It is already impressive when served from large glasses, yet the 2015 vintage has the structure and fruit intensity to develop beautifully for at least another 20 years, particularly in magnum.

Production
The grapes come from 14 small hillside parcels surrounding Shafer Vineyards, where the sloping terrain contributes natural drainage, exposure and the concentration for which Hillside Select is known. The wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was matured for 32 months in entirely new French oak under winemaker Elias Fernandez. This extended élevage integrates the substantial oak framework with the wine’s dense fruit, fine-grained structure and mineral character.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the wine to acclimatise gently. Decant for two to three hours before serving, or open earlier if enjoying it now; the magnum will benefit from patient aeration. Its power and structure make it an excellent match for prime rib, grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison, truffle-rich dishes and mature hard cheeses.
