Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2014 is one of Napa Valley’s great Cabernet Sauvignon icons and a benchmark for powerful, age-worthy hillside wines. Made exclusively from grapes grown across 14 small parcels surrounding Shafer’s estate, this celebrated bottling represents the wine that established Hillside Select as a name on collectors’ shortlists. It is presented in its original wooden case when purchased as a six-bottle case.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intensely coloured in the glass, the 2014 Hillside Select opens with an expressive bouquet of dark plum, blackcurrant tart, cassis and anise, layered with nutmeg and delicate rose-petal notes. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, echoing the dark fruit while adding blueberry, pomegranate, liquorice, crushed stone, tobacco, sage and a subtle smoky character. Its finish is remarkably long, with polished structure and depth that promise considerable longevity. Although already compelling when given time in the glass, this Cabernet Sauvignon has the concentration and balance to develop beautifully for at least another 20 years under suitable cellaring conditions.

Production
The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from 14 small hillside parcels at Shafer Vineyards, where the elevated, sloping sites contribute to the wine’s intensity and structure. The 2014 vintage was made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and matured for an extended 32 months in entirely new French oak. This generous maturation has integrated layers of spice, toast and smoke into the wine’s naturally powerful dark-fruit profile.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the wine’s complexity to unfold. Decant for two to three hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth. Its depth and structure make it an excellent match for prime rib, grilled or roasted beef, venison, lamb, hearty mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
