Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hillside Select 2002 shows deep, concentrated color and a commanding presence. The bouquet is layered with sun-ripened cassis, spring flowers, toasty new oak, and earthy nuance, while the palate delivers remarkable richness and structure without losing its precision. The wine is monumental yet beautifully composed, with seamless integration of fruit, oak, acidity, and tannin. It has the depth and balance to be enjoyed now in large glasses, but it also has exceptional aging potential and is expected to continue evolving for decades.

Production
The grapes come entirely from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on 14 small hillside blocks around Shafer’s estate in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, an area known for producing Cabernet with both muscle and elegance. The hillside terroir contributes concentration, structure, and freshness, while the fruit was vinified and then aged for 32 months in 100% new French oak barrels to build complexity and polish.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for serious dishes and memorable occasions, pairing especially well with prime rib, dry-aged beef, lamb, venison, and richly flavored mushroom dishes.
