Description

Sept Zitani 2022 is a rare, single-varietal white wine from the high mountains of Mount Lebanon, crafted from the almost-forgotten indigenous Zitani grape. Sourced from extraordinarily old vines—over 150 years of age—this bottling captures both the bright intensity of the variety and the purity of its rugged terroir. With Sept’s winemaker Maher currently the only person vinifying Zitani in Lebanon, this is a truly one-of-a-kind expression for adventurous wine lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sept Zitani 2022 shows a pale straw to light lemon hue, with a luminous clarity that hints at its mountain origins. The nose is immediately expressive and lifted: delicate white flowers, citrus blossom, and fresh lemon zest unfold alongside subtle notes of green apple and a faint saline edge. On the palate, the wine is fresh, crisp and linear, driven by bright acidity and vivid citrus fruit. Think juicy lemon, grapefruit, and a touch of lime, balanced by subtle stone-fruit nuances and a poised, precise minerality that runs through the core of the wine. The finish is clean and refreshing, with a lingering impression of citrus peel and wet stone. Best enjoyed in its youth to appreciate its vibrancy and aromatic intensity, it should drink beautifully over the next few years.

Production
The grapes for Sept Zitani 2022 come from the high-altitude village of Mayrouba in Mount Lebanon, where extreme elevation, cooler temperatures, and rocky mountain soils shape the character of this ‘mountain wine’. The Zitani vines—some more than 150 years old—are essentially field treasures that have grown up and along other trees, adding to their resilience and uniqueness. Harvest is carried out by hand to preserve the fragile fruit and to allow careful selection of these precious, low-yielding grapes. In the cellar, Maher vinifies Zitani with a light touch to let the variety and terroir speak clearly: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation, and minimal intervention help preserve its floral, citrusy aromatics and keen sense of minerality, resulting in a pure, transparent expression of this indigenous Lebanese grape.

Food & Serving
This bright, mineral-driven white is a natural partner for fresh, simply prepared dishes. Think Mediterranean seafood—grilled fish, prawns, or ceviche—alongside oysters, shellfish, or delicate raw preparations like crudo and sashimi. It also works beautifully with goat’s cheese, mezze spreads, herby salads, and dishes featuring citrus, fennel, or fresh herbs. Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, to highlight its precision and lift. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into a carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help open up its floral nuances and mineral complexities.

Producer
Sept is one of Lebanon’s most exciting and thoughtful wine producers, known for its focus on organic, terroir-driven expressions and a deep commitment to the country’s indigenous grape heritage. Founded by winemaker Maher, Sept has become a pioneer in rediscovering and vinifying native varieties that had largely fallen into obscurity. By working with high-altitude sites and ancient vines, the estate has helped showcase the remarkable diversity and potential of Mount Lebanon’s vineyards. Sept’s work with Zitani—being the only producer currently vinifying this grape in Lebanon—stands as a significant achievement in preserving and celebrating the country’s viticultural history, and in offering wine lovers truly unique, place-specific wines.
