Description
Sekthaus Raumland MonRose Grande Cuvée Extra Brut 2012 is a masterfully crafted German sparkling wine that showcases just how profound Pinot Noir–based Sekt can be. Made exclusively from Spätburgunder and aged extensively on the lees, it offers a depth and refinement more often associated with top grower Champagnes. Awarded “Sekt des Jahres” and 97 points at the VINUM Deutscher Sekt Award 2025 (Category: Burgunder-Sekte Supreme), it stands as a benchmark for premium German sparkling wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2012 Extra Brut shows a luminous straw-to-golden hue with fine, persistent mousse and an elegant bead of bubbles. The nose is complex and inviting, with notes of vanilla, banana cream, and toffee, layered with cardamom, orange zest, and dark, malty bread.
On the palate, it is at once creamy and precise, opening with a silky mousse before unfurling flavors of grapefruit, kumquat, brioche, and pumpernickel. The acidity is beautifully integrated, lending freshness without sharpness, and the long lees aging brings remarkable depth, savory nuance, and a lingering, lightly toasty finish. Already at a stunning peak, this vintage Sekt has the structure and concentration to continue developing further tertiary complexity over the next several years.
Production
Sourced from selected Spätburgunder parcels in Rheinhessen, the MonRose Grande Cuvée reflects a cool continental climate tempered by gentle slopes and mixed limestone and loess soils that favor finesse and minerality. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness for sparkling wine, with careful selection to ensure only the healthiest bunches reach the press. Vinification follows the traditional method (Méthode Traditionnelle), with gentle whole-bunch pressing, primary fermentation in stainless steel and/or small barrels, followed by a second fermentation in bottle and extended lees aging for many years to build texture, autolytic complexity, and an ultra-fine mousse before disgorgement at an Extra Brut dosage.
Food & Serving
This refined Sekt pairs beautifully with delicate yet flavorful dishes such as sashimi, ceviche, scallops, lobster, or fine white fish with beurre blanc, as well as roasted poultry, veal tartare, and earthy mushroom risottos. Its brioche and pumpernickel notes also make it a natural companion to charcuterie, mature soft cheeses, and refined canapés. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C, ideally in a tulip-shaped sparkling wine glass rather than a narrow flute. A brief decanting in a chilled carafe, or simply giving it time to open in the glass, can help reveal its full aromatic depth.
Producer
Sekthaus Raumland, based in Rheinhessen, is widely regarded as one of Germany’s pioneers and leading specialists for premium traditional-method Sekt.
