Description
Sekthaus Raumland IX. Triumvirat Grande Cuvée Brut Late Release 2009 is a benchmark German sparkling wine that proves just how serious Riesling country can be about traditional-method Sekt. Sourced from select parcels in Rheinhessen and composed of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Pinot Meunier (Schwarzriesling) and complementary varieties, this late-release cuvée offers remarkable complexity and finesse. Extended aging on the lees and a careful, low-dosage style give this wine a depth more commonly associated with top prestige cuvées from Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Late Release shows a luminous, medium-gold hue with an ultra-fine, persistent mousse that signals its long maturation. The nose is layered and expressive: baked apple, ripe yellow stone fruit and candied citrus peel intertwine with brioche, roasted hazelnut, chalky minerality and a touch of dried flowers and honeyed spice.
On the palate, the wine is taut yet generous, combining a creamy, lees-driven texture with a vibrant, focused acidity. Flavors of lemon curd, quince, Mirabelle plum and baked pear mingle with toasted almond, nougat, pastry cream and a saline minerality that carries through to the long, savory finish. The maturity of the 2009 vintage brings a gentle autolytic richness, but the structure remains fresh and precise. This Late Release is drinking beautifully now, with the complexity and nuance of extended aging, yet it still has the backbone to evolve further over the next 5–8 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Rheinhessen’s gently rolling hills and varied soils—ranging from loess and limestone to clay and marl—provide an ideal setting for high-quality base wines destined for traditional-method Sekt. Sekthaus Raumland works with carefully selected parcels and low yields to achieve concentration and balance, harvesting by hand to ensure only the healthiest, optimally ripe grapes make it into the press. The base wines are vinified with great precision, often in stainless steel and partly in neutral oak to maintain freshness while adding subtle texture. After blending Chardonnay, Spätburgunder, Pinot Meunier and other complementary varieties into the final cuvée, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and is then left on the lees for many years, developing its fine mousse and complex autolytic character. This Late Release bottling is disgorged significantly later than the standard Triumvirat, with a carefully judged dosage to highlight purity, structure and terroir rather than sweetness.
Food & Serving
This refined Sekt is a superb partner for elegant cuisine: think oysters, scallops, langoustines or lobster, as well as refined sushi and sashimi. It also shines alongside dishes with a bit more richness, such as butter-poached fish, roast poultry, veal in cream sauce, truffled risotto or mature, hard cheeses. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), to allow the aromatics to fully open. A quick, gentle decant in a chilled carafe—or simply pouring the first glass and giving the bottle a few minutes in the glass—can help the wine express its full range of mature, autolytic notes.
