Description
Sekthaus BurkhardtSchür Blanc de Blancs Brut is a finely crafted German sparkling wine made exclusively from Chardonnay, offering a truly Burgundian sense of depth and elegance. Produced in small quantities using traditional bottle fermentation, it delivers the precision and finesse that serious sparkling wine lovers look for beyond Champagne. With an ultra-low dosage and extended lees aging, this Blanc de Blancs showcases both its meticulous craftsmanship and its expressive German terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Blanc de Blancs pours a bright, pale golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its long maturation on the lees. The nose is complex and inviting: freshly baked warm toast, ripe yellow orchard fruits, and delicate notes of chestnut honey mingle with hints of butter truffle and pear eau-de-vie, creating a layered and gourmand bouquet.
On the palate, the wine is dense and creamy, with a silky texture and impressive concentration. There is a Burgundian-like depth here, combining ripe fruit with a dark, spicy undertone that coats the entire palate. The acidity operates discreetly in the background, providing structure without ever feeling sharp, while the exceptionally fresh and elegant bead of bubbles lifts the richness and keeps everything in perfect balance. With its long lees aging and solid backbone, this Blanc de Blancs has the structure to develop further complexity over the next several years, gaining additional nuance of brioche, nuts, and tertiary notes with careful cellaring.
Production
Although the estate is based in Franken, the Chardonnay for this cuvée comes from bright loess soils with volcanic weathered rock at the Kaiserstuhl, one of Germany’s most renowned warm-climate terroirs. The base wine from the 2016 harvest was matured for eleven months on full lees in barrique, undergoing a spontaneous malolactic fermentation that added textural richness and depth. The sparkling wine was then produced using the traditional method, with secondary fermentation in the bottle and an impressive 39 months of aging on the lees to build complexity, creaminess, and fine mousse. Disgorged in November 2020 with a very low dosage of 2 g/L, the wine is essentially Extra Brut in style, emphasizing purity, precision, and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Blanc de Blancs Brut is an excellent partner for refined dishes such as oysters, scallop carpaccio, grilled turbot, or poached lobster with beurre blanc. It also shines with roasted poultry, truffled poultry terrine, creamy risottos, and mild, nutty cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its precision and freshness. A brief decant in a wide-bowled sparkling wine glass or allowing it to open in the glass over the first 10–15 minutes can help reveal its full aromatic complexity.
