Description
Seckinger Riesling Ruppertsberg Reiterpfad 2022 is a characterful, terroir-driven white from one of Pfalz’s most exciting new-generation estates. Sourced from parcels within the revered Reiterpfad site, this Riesling bridges the gap between serious Großes-Gewächs-style structure and the purity of carefully made natural wine. It’s a bottling for drinkers who enjoy precision, energy, and a clear sense of place in their glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a pale to medium lemon hue with a faint, natural haze due to its minimal intervention and unfiltered bottling. The nose is initially restrained but unfolds with time, revealing yellow orchard fruits, subtle apple skin, citrus zest, and gentle herbal tones. Behind this fruit lies a hint of smokiness, delicate yeasty notes from extended lees aging, and a touch of oxidative nuance that adds complexity rather than heaviness.
On the palate, the Riesling is lean, taut, and laser-focused on its mineral backbone rather than on opulent fruit. Expect a racy, linear structure with vibrant acidity, a salty, stone-inflected core, and an almost wiry texture that feels both serious and highly drinkable. The extended time on full lees lends a fine, textural grip and subtle creaminess without dulling the wine’s tension. This is a Riesling that will benefit from a year or two in bottle to knit together further and should evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more complexity and depth while retaining its fresh, mineral edge.
Production
The Ruppertsberg Reiterpfad is a historically important site in the Pfalz, classified as a Großes Lage, with Seckinger’s parcels lying close to the forest, which provides cooling influence and preserves acidity. The vineyards are farmed according to low-intervention principles and are in conversion, which means the fruit is handled with particular care at harvest and picked by hand to ensure only perfectly healthy grapes reach the cellar. Whole clusters are gently pressed, and fermentation proceeds spontaneously with native yeasts at a very slow pace, allowing the wine to develop complexity and texture naturally. The wine then spends around 16 months on the full lees, gaining depth and character, before being bottled without filtration or fining and with only a small addition of sulfur at bottling—an approach that preserves both terroir expression and the clarity of this natural wine style.
Food & Serving
This Riesling’s taut, mineral-driven profile makes it a superb partner for refined but subtly flavored dishes. Try it with freshly shucked oysters, ceviche, sashimi, or simply prepared white fish with herbs, as well as steamed mussels or lightly smoked trout. It also works beautifully with vegetable-focused plates such as asparagus, fennel, or herb-driven salads, and can stand up to lighter Asian cuisine with ginger, lemongrass, or soy-based dressings. Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, but allow the wine to warm slightly in the glass to unlock its aromatic layers. A brief decant of 15–30 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the initially restrained nose open up and to soften the wine’s more angular edges.
Producer
Weingut Seckinger is a young, dynamic estate in the Pfalz run by the Seckinger brothers, who have quickly gained a reputation for their uncompromising, terroir-focused approach and their skill with low-intervention winemaking. Working primarily with organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards, they aim to showcase the distinctive character of each site, from village-level parcels to prestigious locations like Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad. Their philosophy centers on spontaneous fermentations, long lees aging, and minimal additions in the cellar, resulting in wines that are both authentically ‘natural’ and remarkably precise. In a relatively short time, Seckinger has become one of the most talked-about new names in the Pfalz, helping redefine the region’s image with a portfolio of critically acclaimed, energetic, and deeply expressive wines.
