Description
Schola Sarmenti Roccamora Salento 2023 is a pure Negroamaro that captures the sun-soaked character of Southern Italy in a smooth, approachable red. It’s crafted for those who enjoy generous fruit, velvety texture and a gentle, appetizing bitterness in the finish. Made from carefully selected grapes in Apulia’s Salento peninsula, this wine shows how tradition and modern winemaking can coexist beautifully in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Roccamora 2023 typically shows a deep ruby-red color with violet highlights, hinting at its youthful energy and ripe fruit core. The nose is expressive and inviting, with notes of dark cherry, plum and blackberries, layered with hints of dried herbs, licorice, sweet spice and a subtle, earthy undertone typical of Negroamaro from Salento.
On the palate, the wine is soft and full-flavored with a rounded, velvety mouthfeel. Ripe red and black fruits take the lead, followed by nuances of cocoa, tobacco leaf and Mediterranean scrub. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, giving structure without harshness, and they support a pleasantly bitter, almost savory finish that keeps the wine refreshing and food-friendly. Enjoy it in its youth for its vivid fruit and supple texture, but it can also develop additional complexity over the next 3–5 years.
Production
Roccamora is born in Salento, the southernmost part of Apulia, where vineyards bask in intense sunlight, warm temperatures and constant sea breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian seas. The vines grow in predominantly calcareous and clay-limestone soils, which help to retain freshness and concentration in the grapes despite the heat. Schola Sarmenti places strong emphasis on preserving the local viticultural heritage, often working with older bush-trained vines and hand-harvesting to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe Negroamaro clusters are selected. In the cellar, the grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to protect the varietal aromas and fruit purity, followed by maturation in stainless steel and/or large neutral vessels to maintain the wine’s freshness, softness and authentic Salentino character without heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
Roccamora is a natural partner for rustic, flavor-packed dishes such as tomato-based pasta, grilled sausages, pizza with cured meats, and roasted or braised lamb. It also works beautifully with Mediterranean fare like eggplant parmigiana, stuffed peppers, aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at around 16–18 °C to highlight both its fruit and structure. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the aromas open up, though the wine is generous enough to be enjoyed straight from the bottle on casual evenings.
Producer
Schola Sarmenti is a relatively young but highly respected estate in Salento, Apulia, founded with a clear mission: to safeguard and celebrate the region’s historic wine heritage. The winery has focused from the outset on local varieties such as Negroamaro and Primitivo, working closely with old vineyards and long-time growers to preserve traditional bush-trained vines and the knowledge of elder vignerons. From a region once known mainly for bulk wines shipped north to bolster lighter styles, Schola Sarmenti has helped lead the transformation toward high-quality, estate-bottled wines that proudly bear the Salento name. Today, the producer is regarded as one of the key modern ambassadors of Apulian wine, uniting authenticity, careful vineyard work and contemporary winemaking to create expressive, characterful wines like Roccamora.
