Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Stromberg GG 2022 is a razor‑focused, bone-dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic and extreme vineyards. Sourced from vertiginous, volcanic slopes planted with very old vines, it delivers an electric expression of site and vintage. This Grosses Gewächs (Germany’s top dry wine classification) showcases the house style: crystalline precision, powerful minerality, and striking tension.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Stromberg GG 2022 shows a pale, luminous straw color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with a touch of youthful reduction that quickly lifts to reveal notes of crisp green apple, delicate apple blossom, and a cool, stony mineral character. Subtle floral tones and a suggestion of citrus zest add lift and finesse. On the palate, this is taut, linear and intensely driven, with a spine of vivid acidity cutting through a concentrated core of green apple, lime and white stone fruit. The volcanic origin of the site comes through in a pronounced, mouthwatering salinity and a long, vibrating mineral finish. It is bone dry and tightly wound, with great purity and a sense of “arrow‑like” direction on the palate. Still very young, it will benefit from a few years of cellaring and has excellent aging potential—easily 10–15 years or more under proper conditions, gaining complexity, texture and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
The Bockenauer Stromberg vineyard is Schäfer-Fröhlich’s steepest and most rugged site, carved into weathered volcanic rock that yields tiny, intensely flavored Riesling berries. Many of the vines here are between 80 and 100 years old, with a significant portion around 45 years of age, their deep roots tapping into the mineral-rich subsoil. Yields are naturally low, and harvesting is carried out by hand on the precipitous slopes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected. In the cellar, the fruit is handled gently, typically with whole-bunch pressing and a slow, cool fermentation—often using ambient yeasts—to preserve aromatics and emphasize the site’s mineral character. Elevage is traditionally on fine lees in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak, resulting in a dry, finely etched Grosses Gewächs that is all about clarity and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This tightly structured, saline Riesling is a superb partner for refined, subtly aromatic dishes—think oysters, scallops, and other shellfish, sushi and sashimi, or delicately prepared white fish with citrus or herb-infused sauces. It also shines with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, ceviche, and high-quality vegetable dishes such as asparagus, artichokes, or fennel. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to let the aromatics open slowly. Young bottles can benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes to allow the reduction to blow off and the fruit and florals to emerge; mature bottles are best handled more gently, with minimal aeration.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates of the Nahe and a benchmark name in modern German Riesling. Based in Bockenau, the family-run winery has steadily risen to the top tier through meticulous work in some of the region’s most demanding sites, including the iconic Felseneck and Stromberg vineyards. Under the guidance of Tim Fröhlich, the estate has become renowned for intensely mineral, incisive dry Rieslings that capture the full personality of slate and volcanic soils. Consistently acclaimed by international critics and wine guides, Schäfer-Fröhlich plays a key role in defining the Nahe’s contemporary reputation as a source of world-class, terroir-driven Riesling.
