Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck Riesling Spätlese Goldkapsel 2020 is a brilliant example of how intensity and finesse can coexist in a single glass. Sourced from the steep, slate-rich Felseneck vineyard in the Nahe, this off-dry Riesling combines razor-sharp precision with luxurious fruit and a striking mineral backbone. The coveted Goldkapsel designation highlights a particularly select, concentrated Spätlese bottling with exceptional aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Felseneck Spätlese Goldkapsel is pale lemon with green reflections, signaling both youth and vibrancy. The nose is cool, focused and flinty, with vivid notes of crushed slate, wet stone, flint, and a saline, almost iodine-like edge wrapped around delicate citrus, white peach and subtle herbs. On the palate, it is at once lush and precise: juicy stone fruit, lime zest and white flowers are carried by a crystalline acidity that keeps the wine light on its feet. The texture is silky yet taut, with a deep, salt-tinged minerality running through the long, mouthwatering finish. At just around 7.5% alcohol, it feels airy and elegant rather than rich or heavy. This is a Spätlese built for the long haul; while already thrilling in its youth, it will develop beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity, honeyed notes, and further integration of its sweetness and acidity.

Production
The Felseneck vineyard in Bockenau is one of the Nahe’s great terroirs, defined by steep, south-facing slopes and poor, rocky soils dominated by blue Devonian slate and volcanic rock. This harsh, mineral-rich environment, combined with a cool climate and excellent diurnal variation, produces Rieslings of remarkable tension, depth and aromatic purity. Grapes for the Goldkapsel Spätlese are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes (selective harvest), focusing on perfectly ripe, botrytis-kissed berries that deliver extra concentration and complexity. In the cellar, vinification is kept deliberately gentle and minimalist: slow, temperature-controlled fermentation (often in stainless steel or large neutral vessels) preserves clarity and freshness, while extended time on fine lees enhances texture and nuance without overshadowing the vineyard character.

Food & Serving
This Spätlese Goldkapsel is wonderfully versatile at the table, particularly with dishes that highlight spice, sweetness, or delicate textures. It pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine (Thai, Sichuan, or Vietnamese), aromatic curries, sushi and sashimi, as well as richer dishes like foie gras, roast duck with fruit glaze, or soft, creamy cheeses such as Brie, Camembert and mild blue cheeses. It can also shine alongside fruit-driven desserts that are not overly sweet, like citrus tarts or poached stone fruits. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C; a short, gentle decant (15–20 minutes) or simply allowing it to open in the glass helps the flinty minerality and layered aromatics fully express themselves.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates of the Nahe and among Germany’s most respected Riesling specialists. A family winery with deep roots in Bockenau, it has risen to international prominence under the guidance of Tim Fröhlich, whose relentless focus on terroir expression and precision has earned the estate a place in the top tier of German producers. The domaine is particularly renowned for its dry and sweet Rieslings from steep, stony sites like Felseneck, which consistently receive high praise from major critics and wine guides. Today, Schäfer-Fröhlich is considered a benchmark for mineral-driven, finely etched Rieslings that capture the unique character of the Nahe’s diverse soils and cool climate.
