Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG 2022 in magnum format is a razor-sharp, bone-dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most revered vineyards. Drawn from 60–65-year-old vines in the steep Bockenauer Felseneck site, this Grosses Gewächs is all about precision, energy and mineral depth. Bottled in 1.5 L, it promises not only immediate thrill but also outstanding evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Felseneck GG is pale straw with green highlights, shimmering with youthful intensity. The nose pivots beautifully between ripe yet cool-toned exotic fruit—think fresh pineapple—and pure, zesty lemon, all wrapped in a lifted, stony minerality with a whisper of sea spray and crushed rock. On the palate, it is super-light on its feet, crystalline and taut, with a bone-dry profile. Laser-focused citrus—lemon zest, lime peel—and subtle tropical nuances glide over a core of salty, uncompromising minerality, giving the impression of liquid rock. The finish is long, linear and extremely precise, with a persistent saline snap and a sense of weightless concentration. Thanks to the old vines, dense extract and magnum format, this wine has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully in its youth for those who love tension and purity, but will really hit its stride over 8–20 years, gaining complexity, texture and a more expressive tertiary bouquet.

Production
Bockenauer Felseneck is one of the Nahe’s great terroirs: a steep, wind-exposed slope dominated by slate and volcanic rock, which gives the wines their hallmark stone, citrus and salt profile. Schäfer-Fröhlich’s parcels here are planted with 60–65-year-old Riesling vines, the oldest average vine age in the estate’s holdings, yielding naturally low quantities of intensely flavoured grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected, preserving acidity and aromatic delicacy. In the cellar, Tim Fröhlich works with gentle pressing, spontaneous (wild yeast) fermentation and a slow, unhurried élevage—often in a combination of stainless steel and traditional large neutral oak—allowing the terroir’s clarity and firmness to shine without adornment or noticeable oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a quintessential high-end dry Riesling for refined, mineral-driven pairings. It is superb with pristine seafood such as oysters, scallops, turbot, or grilled sea bass, and pairs beautifully with sushi, sashimi and dishes featuring citrus or delicate Asian spice. It also works with fine vegetable cuisine—white asparagus, artichokes, or herb-laced dishes—and lightly sauced poultry. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C, to allow the aromas to unfurl. Young bottles, especially in magnum, benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to open the nose and soften the initial austerity; older, cellar-aged magnums should be handled gently and decanted briefly only if necessary to remove sediment.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of Germany’s leading modern Riesling estates, based in the village of Bockenau in the Nahe. Under the guidance of Tim Fröhlich, the winery has risen to the very top tier of German producers, particularly renowned for its dry Grosses Gewächs wines from top sites like Bockenauer Felseneck. The estate’s meticulous vineyard work on steep, rocky slopes, combined with a low-intervention, terroir-focused philosophy in the cellar, has earned it critical acclaim, high scores from international reviewers and a reputation for producing some of the most precise, mineral, age-worthy Rieslings in the country.
