Description
Sapaio Sapaio 2020 is a refined Tuscan red that interprets the Bolgheri style through a distinctly elegant, Bordeaux-inspired lens. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it combines structure, depth and aromatic complexity in a wine built both for immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring. The name comes from an ancient Tuscan vine, Sapaia, underlining the estate’s deep connection to its territory, while the crown on the label pays tribute to the nobility of the wine and the skilled hands behind it.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sapaio 2020 shows a deep, intense ruby colour with youthful violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with vibrant blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, followed by layers of cedarwood, graphite, tobacco leaf and subtle dried herbs. With air, more nuanced notes emerge: cocoa nibs, sweet spices, a touch of liquorice and a faint floral lift.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely poised, with ripe, polished tannins and a core of dark fruit that feels both juicy and precise. Blackcurrant and plum meet hints of cassis liqueur, espresso and dark chocolate, wrapped in well-integrated oak. The acidity is fresh and linear, giving the wine drive and length, while the finish is long, savoury and slightly balsamic. Sapaio 2020 has significant aging potential: while already enjoyable with a good decant, it should develop further complexity and tertiary notes over 10–15 years from vintage, and possibly longer in optimal cellaring conditions.
Production
Podere Sapaio’s vineyards lie in the coastal area of Tuscany, where the combination of Mediterranean breezes, abundant sunshine and well-drained, gravelly and sandy soils creates an ideal terroir for Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches directly in the vineyard. Once at the winery, the fruit is sorted again, destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks, allowing for precise extraction of colour, tannin and aroma. The wine then matures in quality oak barrels (often French barriques) for an extended period, which refines the tannins, adds subtle spice and enhances complexity before bottling and additional rest in the cellar.
Food & Serving
Sapaio Sapaio 2020 is an excellent partner for rich, savoury dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled ribeye, slow-braised beef cheeks or lamb shank, as well as game like venison or wild boar ragù. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses, truffle dishes and mushroom-based recipes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and balance. For optimal expression, decant for 1–2 hours before serving, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open fully and soften the tannic structure.
Producer
Podere Sapaio is a relatively young but highly regarded estate in the Bolgheri area of Tuscany, an appellation that has become synonymous with world-class, Bordeaux-style blends. Founded with the aim of showcasing the potential of international grape varieties on Tuscan coastal soils, the winery quickly gained recognition for its meticulous vineyard work and precise, modern winemaking. Podere Sapaio plays an important role in the region’s reputation for powerful yet elegant reds, and its flagship wines, including Sapaio, are frequently cited among the notable labels that have helped elevate Bolgheri and coastal Tuscany to international prominence.
