Why shop with us?
San Polo Rosso di Montalcino 2024 is an organic Sangiovese that offers a fresh, approachable expression of one of Tuscany’s best-known wine regions. Made from hand-harvested grapes and matured in large oak casks, it brings together lively fruit, supple tannins and a sense of place shaped by the hills around Montalcino. San Polo was founded in 1990 and became the first winery in Tuscany to receive CasaClima Wine certification.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in the glass, it opens with aromas of fresh berries, blackberries and black cherry, followed by hints of sour cherry and a delicate touch of vanilla. The palate is warm and medium-bodied, with a dry, fresh character and finely balanced tannins, leading to a persistent, aromatic finish.
Enjoy it while its fruit is vibrant, or cellar it for a few years for a more integrated expression; the provided information does not specify a precise drinking window.
Production
The vineyards lie at around 450 metres above sea level on the hills of Montalcino, with south- and southeast-facing exposure and calcium-rich, calcareous clay soils. Vines are trained using the Guyot system and short-pruned to help control yields. Grapes are hand-picked towards the end of September, carefully sorted and gently pressed before temperature-controlled fermentation in cement vats. Malolactic fermentation and maturation take place in large, lightly toasted oak casks, with 12 months in wood followed by further rest before release.
Food & Serving
Pair with grilled or roasted meats, herb-seasoned pork, tomato-based pasta, or aged pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, though it can also be enjoyed straight from the bottle after a little time in the glass.
Producer
Founded in Montalcino in 1990, San Polo farms vineyards at approximately 450 metres above sea level and is known for its commitment to sustainability and organic production. The estate was the first winery in Tuscany to achieve CasaClima Wine certification. Its 16 hectares of vineyards are overseen by oenologist Riccardo Fratton, with the aim of expressing the character of the local terroir.
