Description

San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi 2019 is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese that captures the pure, elegant side of Montalcino. Crafted under the stewardship of the Allegrini family, it combines Tuscan tradition with meticulous, modern winemaking. Podernovi is one of San Polo’s most prized crus, offering a refined, terroir-driven Brunello that is both approachable in youth and built for the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Podernovi 2019 shows a luminous, deep ruby core with garnet highlights at the rim, signaling both concentration and classic Brunello typicity. The nose is complex and layered, opening with ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and blood orange, followed by notes of dried roses, violets, sweet tobacco and subtle spice. Hints of underbrush, cedar, and a touch of balsamic lift add further nuance as the wine evolves in the glass. On the palate, it is precise and focused, with vibrant Sangiovese acidity framing a core of juicy red fruit, sour cherry and pomegranate. Fine-grained, silky tannins provide structure without harshness, while savory notes of leather, dried herbs and a gentle earthiness contribute depth and length. The finish is long, elegant and saline-mineral, promising excellent development. The 2019 vintage has the balance and concentration to age gracefully for 12–20 years from release, rewarding patience with greater complexity and harmony over time.

Production
Podernovi is sourced from a single vineyard on the southeastern slopes of Montalcino, where well-drained galestro and limestone-rich soils, combined with good altitude and exposure, yield Sangiovese of notable finesse and aromatic purity. The vines are cultivated with a strong focus on sustainability and careful canopy management to ensure optimal ripening. Grapes are harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to retain only the best bunches. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance over power, followed by extended maturation—traditionally in large oak—allowing the wine to integrate tannins and develop complexity while respecting the character of the Podernovi cru.

Food & Serving
San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi 2019 is a natural match for classic Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, and aged pecorino Toscano. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom risotto and roasted game birds, where its aromatic complexity can really shine. Serve at 16–18°C in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to fully express the bouquet. Decant for about 1–2 hours when young to soften the tannins and unlock the wine’s full aromatic spectrum; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
San Polo, owned by the renowned Allegrini family, is a modern, quality-focused estate in Montalcino that has quickly earned a reputation for precision and elegance in Brunello. Established with the goal of showcasing the region’s finest terroirs through a sustainable, vineyard-driven approach, San Polo has become a reference point for contemporary Brunello that respects tradition. The Podernovi vineyard is one of the estate’s flagship crus, consistently yielding wines that attract critical acclaim for their purity, balance and ageworthiness. With a combination of cutting-edge viticulture, environmentally conscious practices and deep experience from Allegrini’s historic roots in Italian wine, San Polo holds a significant place in the ongoing evolution of Brunello di Montalcino.
