Description

San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most carefully farmed hillsides. Crafted under the stewardship of Allegrini, it combines modern precision with classic Brunello character, delivering depth, structure, and real aging potential. The limestone-rich soils and elevated vineyards of San Polo have long been prized for producing elegant, long-lived wines, and this 2018 is no exception.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 San Polo Brunello di Montalcino shows a vibrant, deep ruby core with garnet reflections toward the rim, hinting at both youth and the promise of graceful evolution. The nose is refined and layered, with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose petals, and violet, supported by notes of sweet spice, cedar, tobacco leaf, and a subtle earthy, mineral undertone that speaks of its terroir. On the palate, this Brunello is medium to full-bodied with a precise, linear structure. Juicy red and dark cherry fruit are framed by finely etched tannins and bright, well-integrated acidity, giving the wine both tension and elegance. Flavors of blood orange, dried herbs, licorice, and a hint of leather emerge with air, leading to a long, savory finish marked by mineral notes and gentle oak spice. The 2018 vintage offers approachability in its youth, yet the concentration and structure suggest excellent aging potential—expect it to evolve and gain complexity over 10–15 years, and potentially longer under proper cellaring.

Production
The grapes for San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2018 come from hillside vineyards in the southeastern part of Montalcino, where the combination of altitude, good exposure, and cooling breezes ensures slow, even ripening. The soils are notably rich in limestone, providing excellent drainage and ideal conditions for Sangiovese to develop aromatic finesse and vibrant acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, allowing for careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the wine is vinified traditionally, with controlled fermentation to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, followed by extended maturation in large oak vessels and/or carefully chosen barrels to build structure and complexity without overshadowing the grape’s natural character. This patient approach supports the wine’s renowned capacity for long-term bottle aging.

Food & Serving
San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary, game dishes, hearty ragù over pappardelle, or aged Pecorino Toscano. Its acidity and tannin structure also make it an excellent match for rich mushroom dishes, truffle-based plates, and braised meats. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its layered bouquet.
