Description

San Marzano Collezione Cinquanta Vino Rosso d'Italia is a rich, non‑vintage red created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cantine San Marzano in 2012. Crafted from a selection of native Salento grape varieties, it showcases the generous, sun‑drenched character of Apulia in a bold yet polished style. This wine stands out as a special cuvée, blended across multiple vintages to highlight depth, consistency and a uniquely personal house style rather than a single harvest year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Collezione Cinquanta is deep, almost opaque ruby with garnet hints at the rim, signaling both intensity and maturity. The nose is pronounced and inviting, with layers of ripe red and black fruits—think plum, black cherry and macerated raspberry—woven together with notes of sweet spices, vanilla, licorice, dried herbs and a touch of cocoa. On the palate, it is full‑bodied and generous, with velvety tannins and a plush, rounded texture. Flavors of ripe dark fruits are supported by hints of baking spices, tobacco and a subtle balsamic note that adds complexity and lift. The finish is long, warming and slightly sweet‑spiced, making it a very approachable yet structured wine. As a non‑vintage blend designed for balance and harmony, it is ready to drink upon release but can comfortably age for several more years, developing softer tannins and more integrated tertiary notes.

Production
Collezione Cinquanta is born in the heart of Apulia’s Salento peninsula, where vineyards bask in intense Mediterranean sunshine, tempered by sea breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian coasts. The native grape varieties—traditional to the area and often from older vines—are typically harvested at optimum ripeness to achieve their hallmark concentration and richness. After careful selection, the grapes are vinified separately, with controlled fermentation to preserve fruit purity and extract color and structure, followed by maturation (often partly in oak) to layer in spice complexity and texture before the final blend is composed across multiple vintages. The result is a meticulously crafted cuvée that represents the best of Salento’s indigenous red grapes rather than a single year’s expression.

Food & Serving
This wine’s generous body and ripe fruit profile make it an excellent match for rich, hearty dishes such as braised beef, slow‑cooked lamb, grilled meats, ragù‑based pasta, lasagne and aged hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean fare like eggplant parmigiana, baked pasta dishes and tomato‑based stews. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and spice. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, particularly if the bottle is young.

Producer
Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 in the small village of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, in the Salento area of Apulia, by a group of local growers united by a shared vision for quality. Over the decades, the winery has become one of the region’s most influential producers, helping to elevate Apulian wines on the international stage while remaining deeply rooted in its cooperative origins. Known especially for expressive reds from native varieties, San Marzano combines traditional vineyard practices with modern winemaking techniques. Collezione Cinquanta, created to mark the winery’s 50th anniversary, is now one of its signature labels, symbolizing both the heritage of Salento’s indigenous grapes and the winery’s commitment to crafting generous, characterful wines.
