Tasting Notes
The 2023 Sassicaia is notably expressive in its youth, offering an immediate sense of richness and complexity that is unusual for the estate. Its style is marked by the structure and refinement associated with Bolgheri Cabernet, balanced by an inviting, generous character and impressive concentration. While already approachable, this is a wine with considerable ageing potential. The large format will encourage particularly slow and graceful development, allowing further layers of complexity to emerge over time. It should reward careful cellaring for many years, while offering rare early-drinking pleasure for a young Sassicaia.

Production
The 2023 growing season began with a cold winter and above-average rainfall, followed by a serious outbreak of downy mildew. The disease affected the vine foliage and required rigorous selection in the vineyards, resulting in yields approximately 20% lower than usual. These sacrifices were essential to preserving quality, and the resulting wine was matured in the traditional Sassicaia style before being bottled in January 2026. Bolgheri’s coastal climate, with the moderating influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea and well-drained soils, provides an ideal setting for producing finely structured Cabernet-based wines.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the wine to settle. Despite its youthful openness, the 2023 Sassicaia will benefit from decanting for around two hours, particularly when opened young; a gentle pour is recommended for this large-format bottle. Its depth and structure make it an excellent partner for prime beef, lamb, venison, roasted game birds and richly flavoured dishes with truffle, mushrooms or mature hard cheese.

First developed by the Incisa della Rocchetta family and commercially released in the 1960s, Sassicaia became famous for demonstrating the extraordinary potential of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the Tuscan coast. Its reputation led to the creation of the dedicated Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, and today Tenuta San Guido remains one of Italy’s most prestigious and influential producers.
