Description

San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo 2022 in magnum is a powerful, deeply expressive Tuscan Sangiovese that captures the estate’s trademark combination of purity, intensity and finesse. Overflowing with dark red fruit, spice, cedar and sanguine notes, this is a structured, ageworthy wine that will reward patience in a big way—especially in this larger 1.5 L format. First released in the 1980s, Percarlo has long been considered one of the benchmark 100% Sangiovese wines of Tuscany, helping redefine what the grape can achieve outside the confines of traditional Chianti Classico blends.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Percarlo shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with garnet hints at the rim, already hinting at its concentration and seriousness. The nose is intense and layered: dark cherry, black raspberry and plum are wrapped in notes of exotic spice, cedar wood, new leather, pomegranate and blood orange. With air, more floral nuances emerge—rose petals and violets—alongside cinnamon, dried herbs and a gentle touch of sweet tobacco. On the palate, this is full-bodied and richly textured yet impeccably balanced, with a core of ripe dark red fruit that feels both opulent and precise. The tannins are firm, fine-grained and mouth-coating, giving the wine impressive structure without harshness, while vibrant acidity keeps everything lifted and fresh. Flavours of black cherry, red currant and ripe cranberry unfold into notes of clove, cypress, orange zest and savoury herbs, leading to a long, resonant finish where spice, rose petal and dried herb linger. Still very young, the 2022 is best left untouched for several years; in magnum it has significant aging potential, easily 15–25 years from vintage under proper cellaring, evolving toward more truffle, leather and forest-floor complexity over time.

Production
Percarlo is sourced from organically farmed estate vineyards around San Giusto a Rentennano in the hills of Gaiole in Chianti, a cooler corner of Tuscany known for its rocky, limestone- and marl-rich soils that naturally limit yields and enhance Sangiovese’s aromatic complexity and structure. Vines are carefully tended by hand, with strict green harvesting and low yields to concentrate flavour. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks, often with a long maceration on the skins to extract colour, tannin and aromatic depth. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 22 months in oak—primarily large 30 hl casks with a portion in 500 L tonneaux—striking a balance between purity of fruit and subtle, refined wood influence before bottling and further bottle aging.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic red that shines with richly flavoured dishes: think bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, roasted game birds, or aged Pecorino Toscano and other firm, mature cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-inflected dishes, mushroom risottos and roasted root vegetables with herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structure. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended: for the 2022 vintage in magnum, 2–3 hours of aeration will help the wine unfurl, though even longer decanting will not hurt when enjoyed in its first 5–10 years.

Producer
San Giusto a Rentennano is a historic estate in Gaiole in Chianti, perched on the site of a former medieval monastery and fortress that once belonged to the Ricasoli family. Since the 1970s, the Martini di Cigala family has transformed it into one of Tuscany’s most respected, quality-driven producers, known for organic viticulture, low yields and an uncompromising, artisanal approach. The winery has played a key role in elevating the reputation of Sangiovese through wines like Percarlo and the Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baròncole, frequently earning top scores and critical acclaim. Today, San Giusto is regarded as a reference point in the Chianti Classico area, producing wines that combine depth, authenticity and a strong sense of place.
