Description

San Giovenale Rosso di San Giovenale is a characterful red from the wild, sun‑drenched hills of Lazio, just inland from Rome. Crafted in small quantities by the boutique estate San Giovenale, it offers a modern, polished expression of central Italy that still feels rooted in tradition. This is a wine made for those who enjoy depth, spice and Mediterranean warmth in their glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Rosso di San Giovenale typically shows a deep ruby color with youthful purple hues, hinting at concentration and ripeness. The nose is generous and inviting, with dark berries and cherries layered over notes of dried Mediterranean herbs, sweet spice and a subtle earthy undertone. On the palate, expect a full, rounded mouthfeel with ripe, dark fruit at the core—think blackberry, plum and black cherry—balanced by fresh acidity and well‑integrated tannins. Accents of licorice, cocoa and a gentle smokiness add complexity and length. While it is accessible in its youth, a few years of bottle age will allow the tannins to soften further and the savory, spicy notes to unfold more fully.

Production
San Giovenale is located in the countryside of northern Lazio, where sun‑exposed hillsides, cooling breezes and clay‑limestone soils create ideal conditions for concentrated, expressive reds. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection, with low yields to preserve intensity and balance. In the cellar, the must is fermented in temperature‑controlled tanks to capture aromatic purity, followed by maturation in a combination of stainless steel and/or wooden vessels (depending on the vintage) to add texture and complexity while maintaining the wine’s vibrant fruit and regional character.

Food & Serving
Rosso di San Giovenale pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as slow‑braised lamb, beef ragù, grilled sausages, roast pork, or hearty pasta with tomato and herb sauces. It also works well alongside aged hard cheeses and rustic charcuterie boards. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe for 30–45 minutes; for younger vintages, a short decant can help the aromas open and the tannins settle.

Producer
San Giovenale is a relatively young but highly regarded estate in Lazio, founded with the ambition of showcasing the region’s potential for serious, terroir‑driven red wines. Working with low yields, meticulous vineyard care and a quality‑first mindset, the winery has helped put this lesser‑known area on the map for discerning wine drinkers. San Giovenale’s focus on careful craftsmanship and expressive, Mediterranean‑style reds has earned it a loyal following among enthusiasts looking beyond Italy’s more famous regions.
