Description
Sadi Malot Champagne Grand Cru Les Suzaines Extra Brut 2020 is a refined single-vineyard expression of Chardonnay from some of Champagne’s most prized Grand Cru terroir. Crafted in an extra brut style, it showcases purity, tension, and precision, with minimal dosage allowing the vineyard character to shine. This cuvée reflects the new generation of grower Champagnes: site-focused, meticulous, and deeply rooted in tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Suzaines 2020 presents a luminous, pale gold hue with fine, persistent bubbles forming an elegant, creamy mousse. On the nose, it opens with precise aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and white peach, layered with notes of chalk, crushed shell, and delicate white flowers. Subtle hints of brioche, hazelnut, and fresh cream emerge as it warms in the glass, hinting at both its Chardonnay pedigree and careful élevage.
The palate is driven and linear, with a vibrant backbone of citrus and saline minerality. Flavors of crisp pear, grapefruit, and Meyer lemon are followed by more textural notes of almond, pastry, and a faint smokiness from the chalk-rich soils. The extra brut dosage keeps the wine dry and incisive, yet it remains beautifully balanced, with a fine, silky mousse and a long, mouthwatering finish. While already highly enjoyable now for its tension and clarity, this 2020 Champagne has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–10 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in bottle.
Production
Les Suzaines hails from Grand Cru Chardonnay vines rooted in classic Champagne chalk and limestone, a terroir that naturally delivers tension, precision, and a pronounced mineral edge. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and fruit purity, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and at the press. In the cellar, Sadi Malot employs gentle pressing and a careful, low-intervention vinification, often combining stainless steel for vibrancy with a measure of barrel influence or extended lees aging to add texture and complexity. The Extra Brut dosage is kept to a minimum, allowing the 2020 vintage character and the Grand Cru terroir of Les Suzaines to take center stage.
Food & Serving
This Champagne pairs beautifully with refined, seafood-driven dishes that echo its saline and mineral backbone: think oysters, scallop crudo, ceviche, or simply grilled prawns with lemon and sea salt. It also complements delicate white fish, sushi and sashimi, or lighter poultry dishes such as roast chicken with herbs, along with soft cheeses like Brie or young goat cheese. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and finesse. A brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or a short, gentle decant in a wide-based carafe can help the wine open up aromatically, revealing more of its subtle floral and pastry notes.
Producer
The Sadi Malot estate is a family-run grower in the Champagne region of France, known for crafting characterful Champagnes that emphasize origin and precision over volume. Over generations, the family has steadily built a reputation for attentive vineyard work, focusing on Chardonnay and carefully tended parcels in top crus. Today, Sadi Malot represents the rising wave of quality-conscious récoltant-manipulants, bottling Champagne exclusively from their own vineyards and championing sustainable, terroir-driven practices. Their Grand Cru bottlings, such as Les Suzaines, have gained increasing attention among enthusiasts and sommeliers for their clarity, tension, and authentic expression of Champagne’s chalk-rich hillsides.
