Description

Rougeot Père & Fils Pommard Clos des Roses Monopole 2018 is a finely crafted Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of Pommard’s most intriguing small walled vineyards. As a monopole, Clos des Roses is exclusively farmed and vinified by the estate, giving this wine a particularly pure and distinctive expression of site. The 2018 vintage, generous yet structured, highlights both the charm and the depth that Pommard can achieve in the hands of a meticulous grower.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pommard shows a luminous medium ruby hue with delicate garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with red cherry, wild raspberry and ripe cranberry, layered with rose petals, peony, subtle sweet spice and a hint of blood orange. As it breathes, more savory notes emerge: crushed stones, fine earth, a touch of dried herbs and discreet, well‑integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied with a silken texture, supported by lively, well‑cut acidity and fine, chalk‑tinged tannins. Flavors of red and black cherry, raspberry and pomegranate are intertwined with notes of rooibos tea, cloves, a whisper of licorice and a distinctly mineral backbone from the gravelly, sandy soils. The finish is long, precise and gently spicy, with floral and saline nuances lingering on the aftertaste. Enjoyable now with a bit of air, this 2018 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years from the vintage, developing more sous‑bois, truffle and tertiary complexity over time.

Production
Clos des Roses is a tiny, walled parcel of just under one hectare, nestled within the south‑east facing lieu‑dit Rue du Porc in Pommard, on alluvial soils rich in gravel and sand. These free‑draining soils favor deep root penetration and lend finesse and aromatic lift to Pinot Noir, rather than sheer power. The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard followed by a second sorting at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Fermentation takes place over roughly three weeks, with about 90% whole clusters, bringing additional structure, aromatic complexity and a touch of savory spice. After fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic conversion and is aged for 18 months in barriques, with oak serving as a gentle frame rather than a dominant feature. Bottling is done without fining or filtration and with only a modest sulfur addition, preserving texture, purity and the authentic character of this monopole terroir.

Food & Serving
This Pommard is an elegant partner for refined but flavorful dishes: roast duck with cherries, guinea fowl, coq au vin, herb‑crusted lamb, veal, or pork tenderloin with wild mushrooms all work beautifully. It also shines alongside Burgundian classics such as boeuf bourguignon, pigeon, and earthy vegetable dishes featuring lentils, beets or celeriac, as well as aged cheeses like Comté or mild washed‑rind styles. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to allow the whole‑cluster character and floral notes to fully unfurl; with additional bottle age, gentler aeration will suffice.

Producer
Rougeot Père & Fils is a long‑established family domaine based in Meursault, with multi‑generational roots in the Côte de Beaune and a growing reputation for characterful, terroir‑driven wines. Over the years, the estate has expanded its holdings to include carefully chosen parcels in neighboring appellations such as Pommard, where monopole vineyards like Clos des Roses underscore the domaine’s commitment to singular sites. Farming is increasingly focused on organic and low‑intervention practices, and in the cellar the approach is deliberately restrained: thoughtful use of whole bunches, sensitive élevage and minimal handling to let each cru speak clearly. This philosophy has placed Rougeot among the noteworthy small producers of the region, appreciated by Burgundy enthusiasts for wines that combine authenticity, precision and a strong sense of place.
