Rolly Gassmann Alsace Pinot Gris 2017 is a beautifully characterful white from one of Alsace’s most respected names. Sourced from the small village of Rorschwihr, it reflects the region’s layered soils and the house’s hallmark style: generous, precise, and impeccably balanced. This is a Pinot Gris with both richness and restraint, offering immediate appeal and the structure to age gracefully.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden-yellow hue that hints at its richness. The nose is expressive yet refined, with white flowers, ripe apricot, peach, and a subtle thread of spice.
On the palate, it is full-bodied but fresh, combining citrus brightness with mineral tension and a wonderfully elegant texture. The finish is long and balanced, with enough depth to reward a few years of cellaring, during which the wine should gain further complexity and nuance.
Production
This Pinot Gris comes from Rorschwihr in Alsace, where a patchwork of clay, sand, limestone, and granite creates a strikingly varied terroir. These contrasting soils help produce wines with strong personality, clarity, and a firm mineral backbone. Rolly Gassmann is known for crafting wines with careful vineyard selection and gentle vinification that preserves aromatic purity and natural balance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast poultry, veal, mushroom dishes, rich seafood, and Alsatian specialties such as tarte flambée or choucroute. It also works well with mildly spiced Asian cuisine and creamy cheeses. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if opening young, especially if you want to open up its aromatic complexity.
Producer
Rolly Gassmann is one of Alsace’s benchmark producers, based in the village of Rorschwihr. The estate has earned a strong reputation for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines with impressive depth and aging potential. Over the years, the domaine has become particularly admired for its precision, consistency, and its ability to showcase the nuances of Alsace’s diverse soils.
