Description
Roland Lavantureux Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey 2022 is a finely chiseled, mineral-driven Chardonnay from one of Chablis’ most characterful premier cru sites. This cuvée captures the purity, tension and precision that have made Chablis a benchmark for cool-climate white Burgundy. The steep, south- to south-east–facing slopes of Vau de Vey give the wine both crystalline freshness and impressive depth, making this a standout bottle for lovers of terroir-focused Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous pale straw color with green reflections, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with classic Chablisienne notes of oyster shell, wet stone and sea breeze, followed by layers of lemon zest, green apple, white flowers and a touch of chalky dust.
On the palate, it is taut and linear yet surprisingly textural, with a core of citrus (lemon and grapefruit), crunchy pear and just-ripe stone fruit framed by a laser-like acidity. Saline, almost iodized minerality runs through the finish, lending a mouthwatering, savory edge and great length. The 2022 vintage offers a touch more ripeness and mid-palate weight than cooler years, without sacrificing the hallmark tension of Vau de Vey. Already highly enjoyable in its youth, it will reward 5–8 years of cellar time, developing notes of hazelnut, honey and brioche while retaining its mineral spine.
Production
Vau de Vey is a steep, cool premier cru valley on the left bank of the Serein River, with predominantly Kimmeridgian limestone and marl soils rich in fossilized seashells—ideal for producing incisive, mineral-laden Chablis. The challenging topography often necessitates careful, largely manual work in the vineyard, with yields kept moderate to preserve concentration and balance. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to capture both vibrancy and depth, then gently pressed and fermented, typically in stainless steel and neutral vessels to protect the purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is aged on fine lees, adding subtle texture and complexity without overt oak influence, resulting in a Chablis that is both precise and layered.
Food & Serving
This premier cru Chablis is a natural partner for seafood: think oysters, scallops, sushi and sashimi, grilled white fish, or prawns with lemon and herbs. It also shines alongside goat cheese, fresh cheeses, lightly dressed salads, and simple roasted chicken or poultry in a light cream or lemon-butter sauce. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics and minerality to fully emerge. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a larger white wine glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help the wine open and reveal additional layers.
