Description

Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 2021 is a single-vineyard Barolo from one of La Morra’s most revered crus, crafted entirely from Nebbiolo. This is a refined, site-driven wine that balances power with extraordinary finesse, showcasing why Rocche dell’Annunziata is often considered a “grand cru” of Barolo. With its combination of depth, fragrance and structure, the 2021 vintage offers both immediate charm and serious aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barolo typically shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, characteristic of classic Nebbiolo. The nose is highly perfumed and complex, with notes of dried roses, violet, red cherry and wild strawberry layered over hints of orange zest, sweet spices, licorice and subtle tobacco and underbrush. On the palate, Rocche dell’Annunziata is known for its elegance and fine-grained tannins rather than sheer muscle. Expect juicy red berry fruit, pomegranate and cranberry framed by nuances of anise, rose petal, cedar and earthy minerality. The texture is silky yet structured, with fresh, lifted acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and long on the finish. The 2021 vintage, from a classically styled, balanced year, should evolve beautifully over 10–20 years in a good cellar, gaining more truffle, leather and savory complexity with time while the tannins continue to resolve.

Production
The Rocche dell’Annunziata cru sits in La Morra, in the heart of Barolo, on south and southwest-facing slopes with calcareous clay-limestone soils that are renowned for producing particularly aromatic and refined expressions of Nebbiolo. These conditions, combined with good elevation and excellent drainage, yield grapes of great concentration but also striking finesse. Rocche Costamagna harvests the Nebbiolo by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. After gentle crushing, the wine undergoes a traditional fermentation and extended maceration on the skins to extract aroma, color and structure, followed by aging in large oak casks (botti) and/or carefully chosen barrels to respect the character of the cru. The result is a Barolo that transparently expresses its terroir rather than the imprint of heavy oak.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes, especially those rooted in Piedmontese cuisine. Think braised beef, veal shank, lamb shanks, game birds, truffle risotto, tajarin with meat ragù, porcini mushrooms, mature cow’s milk cheeses and aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully open without losing freshness. Decant young vintages like 2021 for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and unlock the floral and spice nuances; more mature bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant mainly to remove sediment.

Producer
Rocche Costamagna is a historic family estate based in La Morra, with roots in Barolo production going back to the mid-19th century. The winery takes its name from the Rocche dell’Annunziata cru, one of the zone’s most celebrated vineyards, and has long been associated with terroir-driven, traditional-style Barolo. Over generations, the Costamagna family has helped to reinforce La Morra’s reputation for producing some of the most elegant and perfumed expressions of Nebbiolo in the region. Known for a thoughtful balance of tradition and modern precision, Rocche Costamagna has garnered critical recognition for the consistent quality and authenticity of its wines, particularly those from single-vineyard bottlings like Rocche dell’Annunziata.
