Tasting Notes
In the glass, San Germano 2019 shows a deep ruby red hue with youthful purple highlights along the rim. The nose is inviting and layered: dark cherry, blackcurrant and plum from the Cabernet and Merlot intertwine with Sangiovese-driven notes of red berries, dried herbs and a hint of violets. Subtle tones of cedar, sweet spice and a touch of tobacco or graphite speak to careful élevage. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a firm yet polished tannic structure and lively Tuscan acidity. Ripe blackberry, cassis and black cherry are supported by hints of leather, Mediterranean herbs and a delicate mineral edge. The balance of fruit, freshness and fine-grained tannins suggests it will evolve beautifully over time. San Germano is sourced from vineyards on the historic San Germano hill in Tuscany, an area whose soils and climate have nurtured vines since Etruscan times. The terroir is typically Tuscan-Maremma in character, with well-drained soils rich in minerals and a warm, sun-drenched climate tempered by cooling breezes—conditions that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. Grapes are harvested selectively at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to ensure only healthy, fully mature clusters are used. In the cellar, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese are vinified with temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve aromatics and varietal character, followed by maturation—partly in oak—to polish the tannins and integrate the blend while retaining the wine’s vibrant fruit and sense of place.
