Description
Robert Weil’s Kiedricher Grafenberg GG 2018 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Rheingau’s most revered grand cru vineyards. This Grosses Gewächs (GG) marries depth, precision and mineral tension, offering a wine that is intensely expressive yet built for long-term aging. Sourced from the steep, slate- and quartzite-rich slopes above Kiedrich, it reflects both the pedigree of the site and the meticulous craftsmanship of one of Germany’s leading estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Kiedricher Grafenberg GG shows a luminous, pale straw to light gold hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is deep, youthful and still a touch restrained, with a slightly “still-fermenting” impression: ripe stone fruits (white peach, apricot), citrus zest, green apple skin and subtle notes of herbs and crushed rock, all wrapped in a cool, stony minerality.
On the palate, this is full-bodied for a dry Riesling yet wonderfully refined and taut. The fruit is intense and pure, with layers of yellow plum, mirabelle and lime interwoven with saline, smoky and subtly spicy tones. A fine but firm backbone of phenolic grip and youthful tannins frames the wine, giving it texture and length, while vibrant acidity keeps everything focused and precise. The long, salty, finely tannic finish feels both powerful and elegant. The 2018 has more tannic structure than the 2019 and will benefit from additional bottle age; expect a graceful evolution over 10–15+ years, gaining complexity, finesse and a more seamless integration of its impressive richness.
Production
The Kiedricher Grafenberg vineyard is one of the Rheingau’s most prized sites, a steep, south to southwest-facing slope above the village of Kiedrich with stony soils rich in Taunus quartzite, slate and loess. The poor, well-drained subsoils force the Riesling vines to dig deep, concentrating mineral character and natural acidity while the slope and exposure ensure excellent ripening. Grapes for this GG are typically hand-harvested in multiple passes to select only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, Robert Weil follows a precise yet sensitive approach: gentle pressing, slow and cool fermentation—often with a significant proportion of spontaneous (wild) yeast—in stainless steel and large traditional oak Stückfass, followed by extended lees contact to build texture and complexity without masking the vineyard’s signature clarity.
Food & Serving
This structured, powerful dry Riesling is a superb match for refined, flavorful dishes: think poached or roasted turbot, sole or halibut with beurre blanc, scallops, langoustines, or elegant sushi and sashimi. It also pairs beautifully with veal, roast chicken with herbs, pork tenderloin, or aromatic vegetable dishes such as asparagus, artichoke or fennel, as well as moderately spiced Asian cuisine. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a white wine or large Riesling glass to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open the nose; older bottles should be opened carefully and need only gentle aeration.
Producer
Weingut Robert Weil, founded in 1875 in Kiedrich in the Rheingau, is widely regarded as one of Germany’s blue-chip Riesling estates. Over generations, the winery has built a reputation for precision, purity and longevity in its wines, with the steep, classified sites of Kiedrich—most notably Gräfenberg, Klosterberg and Turmberg—at the heart of its identity. Robert Weil was instrumental in restoring the prestige of dry and noble-sweet German Rieslings on the world stage, and its wines regularly receive top scores and feature on leading restaurant lists globally. The Kiedricher Grafenberg Grosses Gewächs is considered one of the estate’s flagship dry bottlings and a reference point for Rheingau Riesling of depth, power and elegance.
