Robert Weil’s Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2022 is a refined, late-harvest Riesling from one of the Rheingau’s most distinguished vineyard sites. Combining vibrant acidity with elegant sweetness and remarkable precision, it showcases the classic balance and ageing potential for which the estate is renowned.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden yellow in appearance, this Spätlese opens with lifted aromas of ripe peach, apricot and yellow apple, complemented by floral nuances and a subtle mineral character. The palate is concentrated yet graceful, offering layers of stone fruit, citrus and delicate honeyed notes, all carried by refreshing acidity.
The wine’s sweetness is beautifully integrated, leaving a long, clean and mineral finish rather than a heavy impression. With its balance of fruit, acidity and structure, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for many years, developing deeper honeyed, savoury and petrol-like Riesling nuances over time.
Production
The Kiedrich Gräfenberg is a prestigious, steeply sloping vineyard in the Rheingau, where Riesling benefits from excellent sun exposure, mineral-rich soils and the moderating influence of the Rhine. Grapes for Spätlese are harvested at advanced ripeness, typically by careful selective hand-picking to preserve the healthiest fruit and achieve the desired concentration. At Robert Weil, the wine is made with a focus on purity and terroir expression, allowing the natural acidity and character of the site to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This elegant Spätlese pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine, aromatic Thai or Indian dishes, sushi and sashimi, foie gras, smoked fish and soft, mature cheeses. It is also a superb partner for fruit-based desserts, though its freshness makes it equally enjoyable on its own. Decanting is not essential, but a short period of aeration in the glass can reveal additional layers and complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1867 by Wilhelm Weil, Weingut Robert Weil has become one of the leading names of the Rheingau and is particularly celebrated for its Rieslings from Kiedrich. The estate’s distinctive blue-and-gold labels are associated with precision, elegance and outstanding longevity. Its top vineyards, including Kiedrich Gräfenberg, are regarded among the finest in Germany, and the winery has played a significant role in establishing the international reputation of Rheingau Riesling.
