Description

Robert Groffier Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze 2019 is a powerful yet finely detailed expression of one of Burgundy’s most storied vineyards. This grand cru marries depth, structure, and aromatic complexity in a way that only great Clos de Bèze can, offering a wine that is both captivating in youth and built for the long haul. Sourced from one of the most prestigious terroirs in Gevrey-Chambertin, it reflects the Groffier family’s meticulous craftsmanship and deep-rooted Burgundian heritage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Clos de Bèze shows a deep, radiant ruby color with garnet hints at the rim, signaling both concentration and finesse. The nose is immediately expressive, unfolding layers of dark cherry, black raspberry, and wild strawberry, intertwined with notes of rose petal, violets, and a delicate spice cabinet complexity—clove, star anise, and a hint of sandalwood. Subtle undertones of forest floor, graphite, and fine cedar suggest both noble origin and thoughtful élevage. On the palate, this is both precise and generous: silky, mouth-coating tannins frame a core of ripe red and black fruits, lifted by vibrant acidity. Flavors of Morello cherry, blackcurrant, and red plum mingle with savory nuances of earth, underbrush, and crushed rock, giving the wine remarkable depth and energy. The finish is long, pure, and persistent, with lingering mineral and floral notes that echo long after each sip. While already seductive in its youth, the structure and balance indicate excellent aging potential—15 to 25 years or more in a good cellar, during which the wine will gain further complexity, truffle notes, and a more velvety texture.

Production
Clos de Bèze is one of Burgundy’s most revered grand cru sites, perched on the upper slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin with a mix of limestone-rich soils, marl, and excellent drainage that naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor. The vineyard’s exposure and elevation provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening, preserving aromatic nuance and freshness in the Pinot Noir. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the final cuvée. Vinification generally involves a gentle, traditional Burgundian approach: partial or total destemming depending on vintage character, a cold maceration to draw out color and aroma, followed by a controlled fermentation in open tanks with punch-downs or pump-overs for delicate extraction. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels—often with a judicious proportion of new oak—to refine the tannins, add subtle spice, and allow the terroir of Clos de Bèze to shine through rather than be masked.

Food & Serving
This grand cru Pinot is a natural partner for refined, flavorful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck or guinea fowl, herb-crusted lamb, game birds, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or black truffle. Rich poultry dishes, veal with morels, or a simple roast chicken with jus will also highlight its elegance. For cheese, opt for aged Comté, Beaufort, or a well-ripened Brie de Meaux. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to show both aromatic lift and textural finesse. Decanting 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open; with age, a gentle, shorter decant—mainly to remove sediment—will be sufficient.

Producer
Domaine Robert Groffier is one of the most respected names in the Côte de Nuits, renowned for crafting deeply expressive, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from some of Burgundy’s finest sites. Based in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, the family estate has been passed down through generations, steadily building a reputation for precision in the vineyard and sensitivity in the cellar. While particularly famous for its Chambolle-Musigny and Bonnes-Mares holdings, the domaine’s work in grand cru and premier cru parcels across the Côte de Nuits has cemented its status as a benchmark producer in the region. Low yields, meticulous vineyard management, and a thoughtful, minimally interventionist winemaking philosophy have led to widespread acclaim from Burgundy collectors and critics alike, making bottles from Robert Groffier highly sought-after on the international fine wine market.
