Ridge Vineyards’ Petite Sirah Lytton Estate 2016 is a striking, deeply expressive Sonoma County red that gives Petite Sirah the spotlight it deserves. Sourced from the historic Lytton Springs vineyard in Dry Creek Valley—where the variety has been grown since 1901—this is a bold, characterful wine that combines pedigree, depth, and remarkable value.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an inky, near-black colour with a vivid purple rim. The nose is wonderfully layered, offering blue fruit, leather, liquorice, lavender, menthol, and a subtle earthy gravel note. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intense, with plenty of concentration and the same aromatic complexity carried through in a seamless, powerful flow. Despite its richness, the wine feels balanced and well put together, with enough freshness and structure to keep it energetic. It should age very well over the coming years, gaining even more nuance and polish with bottle time.

Production
The grapes come from Lytton Springs vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, a site long associated with classic old-vine field blends and sustainable farming. Petite Sirah is the dominant variety here, with only 6% Zinfandel in the blend, and the fruit is de-stemmed before pressing. After fermentation, the wine matures for 12 months in American oak barrels, 20% of which are new, adding subtle spice and structure without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for rich, savoury dishes such as grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb shank, or pepper-crusted steak. It also works beautifully with hearty mushroom dishes and slow-cooked barbecue. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the aromatic complexity and structure open up fully.
