Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Magnum

Ridge Vineyards’ Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon is one of California’s great benchmark reds, celebrated for its remarkable balance, mountain-grown intensity, and unmistakable sense of place. First released in 1962, it draws on a vineyard history that stretches back to 1886 in the Santa Cruz Mountains, making it a wine with both pedigree and enduring relevance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Magnum shows a deep dark ruby hue. The nose is beautifully layered, with ripe plum, blackberry, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone, and subtle oak spice from its élevage in new air-dried barrels. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied, yet refined and composed, with dark fruit at the core and the aromatic notes echoing through the finish. Despite its concentration, the wine carries only 13.7% alcohol, which helps preserve its elegance and poise. It is still very youthful and has the structure to age gracefully for many years to come.

Production
Monte Bello is sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the cooler mountain climate and rocky soils help produce wines of brightness, structure, and finesse. The wine is crafted as a Bordeaux-style blend, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and aged for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels to build complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for classic red-meat dishes such as ribeye, lamb rack, or braised short ribs, as well as mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if drinking young to allow the wine to खुलen and reveal its full aromatic depth.
