Ridge Monte Bello is one of California’s most celebrated Cabernet-based wines, admired for its remarkable balance, longevity, and understated power. First released in 1962, it draws on a vineyard site with roots dating back to 1886 in the Santa Cruz Mountains, making it a true benchmark for American fine wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep dark ruby color, signaling concentration and depth. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe plums, blackberries, espresso, black truffles, anise, crushed stone, and finely integrated oak notes. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, yet carried by impressive elegance and balance. Dark fruit leads the way, supported by savory complexity and a polished structure that suggests excellent aging potential; this is still very young and should develop beautifully over many years.

Production
Monte Bello Vineyards sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the combination of elevation, cool air influence, and stony soils helps produce Cabernet of intensity and finesse. The 2017 is a Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot contributing depth and aromatic complexity. It was aged for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels, adding structure and subtle spice without overwhelming the wine’s natural harmony.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavored dishes such as dry-aged beef, ribeye, lamb chops, game, or truffle-based dishes, as well as hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to fully open and show its many layers.
