Ridge Monte Bello is one of California’s great benchmark wines, and the 2019 Magnum shows exactly why it has earned legendary status. First produced in 1962 from the historic Monte Bello Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it combines Bordeaux-inspired structure with the lift, precision, and elegance that have made Ridge a reference point for American fine wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Monte Bello pours a deep, dark ruby. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe plum, blackberry, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone, and subtle oak spice from its élevage in new air-dried French oak. The palate is powerful and concentrated, yet beautifully composed. Dark fruit leads the way, supported by savory complexity and polished tannins, with impressive freshness and balance keeping everything in check. Still very youthful, it has the depth and structure to age gracefully for many years, likely evolving beautifully over decades.

Production
Monte Bello Vineyard sits high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where elevation, cooler temperatures, and rocky soils help produce wines with intensity and finesse. The blend is Bordeaux-inspired, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot, and the fruit is crafted by winemaker Eric Baugher. The wine is matured for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels, contributing structure, fragrance, and complexity without overpowering the wine’s natural elegance.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for equally refined dishes: grilled ribeye, lamb rack, venison, beef Wellington, or rich mushroom-based plates all work beautifully. Serve it at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if opening young, as it will benefit from air and gradually reveal its full aromatic range.
