Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2018 37,5CL

Ridge Monte Bello is one of California’s great benchmark reds — a wine with real pedigree, precision and staying power. First released in 1962, it draws on vineyards that have been planted in the Santa Cruz Mountains since 1886, giving it both historical depth and a modern reputation as a collector’s wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby color that hints at its intensity and concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe plum, blackberry, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone and finely integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is powerful and full-bodied, yet remarkably composed and elegant. Dark fruit leads the way, followed by savory, earthy nuances and a long, structured finish. This is still a very youthful Monte Bello, but it already shows the kind of balance and complexity that suggest excellent aging potential over many years, and likely decades.

Production
Monte Bello comes from the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the altitude and cool mountain climate help preserve freshness and refine the wine’s structure. The blend is built around Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, creating a Bordeaux-inspired style with California character. It is aged for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels, adding depth, spice and polish without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that deserves equally thoughtful food. It pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, venison, slow-braised beef or dishes with mushrooms and truffle. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours if opening young, to let the wine fully раскры it?
