Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs 2020 300CL

Ridge Vineyards’ Lytton Springs is one of California’s great Zinfandel-based classics, sourced from the famed Lytton Springs Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. First made in 1972, it carries more than five decades of heritage, with winemaker Eric Baugher continuing Ridge’s celebrated legacy at a consistently high level.

Tasting Notes
Deep, dark and almost opaque in the glass, this 2020 vintage opens with layered aromas of ripe blackberry, blood orange, pepper, liquorice, tobacco leaf and dried flowers. The palate is full-bodied and generous, echoing the nose with impressive depth and complexity, while the supporting structure gives the wine the presence to age beautifully over the coming years. The blend is led by Zinfandel, with Petite Sirah and Carignane adding power, spice and backbone. The result is a rich, expressive red that combines concentration with balance and plenty of character.

Production
The grapes come from Lytton Springs Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, one of Sonoma’s most respected sites for old-vine field blends. All fruit is sustainably grown and was destemmed before fermentation, then matured in American oak barrels, of which 10% were new and the remainder one to four years old, helping preserve freshness while adding subtle spice and texture.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for grilled or smoked meats, braised short ribs, barbecue, peppered steak and hearty Mediterranean dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the layers of fruit, spice and savoury complexity open fully.
