Ridge Vineyards’ Lytton Springs is one of California’s benchmark old-vine field blends, first produced in 1972 and built around Zinfandel with carefully selected supporting varieties. The 2017 vintage showcases Ridge’s signature approach to balance and complexity, with a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan and Mourvèdre chosen to reflect the character of the year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lytton Springs typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple color with impressive concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, offering ripe dark berries, blackberry compote, plum, spice, licorice, and savory notes that give the wine real depth. On the palate, it is generous yet structured, with plush fruit, lively freshness, firm tannins, and the kind of detail and harmony that has made this wine so highly regarded vintage after vintage. This is a wine with strong aging potential. While it can be enjoyed young for its juiciness and energy, a few years in bottle will bring greater integration, softer tannins, and even more nuance to the blend.

Production
Lytton Springs is sourced from old-vine vineyards in Sonoma County, where warm California sunshine is tempered by evening cooling, helping preserve balance and freshness. Ridge is known for harvesting each component separately and selecting the final blend with great precision, adjusting the proportions according to the character of the vintage. In 2017, the finished blend was 74% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 9% Carignan, and 2% Mourvèdre, crafted to highlight the best qualities of the year while maintaining the wine’s classic Lytton Springs identity.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile wine for rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled lamb, barbecue ribs, roast pork, braised short ribs, or hearty mushroom-based cuisine. It also pairs well with aged cheeses and dishes with a touch of spice. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 1 hour if drinking young, to let the aromatics and structure open fully.
