Ridge Vineyards Lytton Estate Petite Sirah 2022

Ridge Vineyards Lytton Estate Petite Sirah 2022 is a rare, small-production expression of one of California’s most powerful grapes. Usually an important component of Ridge’s celebrated Lytton Springs, Petite Sirah is bottled separately only in exceptional vintages, allowing its depth, structure and concentration to take centre stage. The Lytton Estate has a long history with the variety, including plantings dating back to 1901.

Tasting Notes
Deep and opaque in appearance, this Petite Sirah opens with intense aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum, followed by expressive notes of violet, black pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate. Subtle toasted nuances from the oak add further complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and richly textured, with firm, well-defined tannins and a long, spicy finish. Despite its power, the wine retains a sense of balance and freshness. It is approachable with decanting when young, but has the structure and concentration to develop beautifully over many years—likely well into the 2030s under suitable cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes come from five selected parcels covering 12 acres at Lytton West, in the rolling hills between Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley, just north of Healdsburg. The gravelly loam soils provide excellent drainage and help moderate the natural power of the variety. Organically farmed grapes were hand-harvested between 7 and 12 September 2022 and destemmed before fermenting as whole berries with indigenous yeasts. Gentle extraction, including just one pump-over per day, preserved balance and texture. Following complete malolactic fermentation, the wine matured for 16 months in air-dried American oak barrels, 20% of which were new.

Food & Serving
Its robust structure makes this an excellent partner for grilled or braised beef, slow-cooked short ribs, venison, lamb and richly seasoned barbecue. It also pairs well with earthy mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours if enjoying the wine in its youth to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic complexity.
