Ridge Vineyards Lytton Estate Petite Sirah 2021

Ridge Vineyards Lytton Estate Petite Sirah 2021 is a powerful, distinctive California red made from vines first planted at the Lytton Springs site in 1901. Produced in limited quantities by winemaker Eric Baugher, it showcases Petite Sirah’s naturally dark, structured character—an entirely different variety from Syrah.

Tasting Notes
Deeply coloured, almost opaque, with striking purple highlights. The nose is intense and layered, combining ripe blue fruit with leather, liquorice, lavender, menthol and mineral notes reminiscent of gravel. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, bringing together generous fruit, firm tannins and a savoury, earthy complexity. Its structure and depth give it excellent cellaring potential, with the promise of further development over the next several years.

Production
The Petite Sirah comes from Ridge’s historic Lytton Springs vineyard in California, where the vines benefit from a sustainable approach to viticulture. The grapes are destemmed before fermentation, which takes place with whole berries and gentle pump-overs to extract only what is needed from the skins. Following fermentation, the wine matures for 16 months in American oak barrels, 15% of which are new, adding subtle spice and toasty depth while preserving the wine’s powerful fruit character.

Food & Serving
Its bold structure makes it an excellent match for richly flavoured dishes such as grilled or braised beef, lamb, venison, barbecue ribs and hearty mushroom preparations. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and allow the fruit and aromatic layers to open.
