Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Chardonnay 2018 is a remarkable, site-driven Chardonnay from the cool Santa Cruz Mountains, crafted from a blend of Wente, Hyde, and Mt Eden clones. With its precise balance, vivid minerality, and striking complexity, it showcases why Rhys has become one of California’s most respected names for Burgundian-style wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with an intensely expressive bouquet of lemon, pineapple, mandarin oil, and white flowers, layered with more distinctive notes of gunpowder, crushed stone, and flint. On the palate, it is concentrated yet finely poised, with bright acidity giving shape to the wine’s creamy texture and lifted citrus- and stone-fruit core. The finish is long, saline, and mineral-driven, leaving impressions of citrus peel, wet stone, and a subtle salty edge. This is a Chardonnay with real depth and energy, and it has excellent aging potential; Jeb Dunnuck notes it should drink beautifully through 2032.

Production
Horseshoe Vineyard sits at around 500 meters in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the cool climate and rocky soils help preserve freshness while building aromatic intensity and structure. All vineyard work is carried out by hand, reflecting the steep, demanding site and Rhys’ meticulous approach to farming. The wine is fermented in oak barrels and then matured for six months in stainless steel, a combination that preserves purity while adding texture and complexity.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with rich but elegant dishes such as roast chicken, lobster, scallops, creamy pasta, or grilled fish with butter and herbs. Serve it slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to let the aromatics and minerality show at their best. Decanting is not essential, but a little air can help open the wine if served young.
