Description
R.H. Coutier Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Rosé Extra Brut is a finely crafted grower Champagne from the heart of the famed Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Champagne region of France. Blending a generous portion of Chardonnay with red Pinot Noir wines, this cuvée is designed to deliver both finesse and elegance in the glass. Its Extra Brut dosage highlights the purity of the fruit and the character of its Grand Cru terroir, offering a rosé Champagne that is precise, vibrant, and gastronomic.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grand Cru rosé shows a delicate, shimmering salmon-pink hue with fine, persistent bubbles forming a refined mousse. The nose is expressive yet poised, opening with wild strawberries, redcurrants, and raspberries, followed by notes of blood orange, pink grapefruit, and a hint of stone fruit from the Chardonnay. Subtle layers of rose petals, chalk, brioche, and a gentle spice add complexity as the wine aerates.
On the palate, the Extra Brut style brings tension and clarity: red berry fruits are carried by a lively, mineral backbone and a precise, mouthwatering acidity. The Chardonnay component delivers lift, citrus brightness, and a fine, almost chalk-dust texture, while the Pinot Noir lends structure, depth, and a delicate tannic grip from the red wine addition. The finish is long, clean, and saline, with lingering notes of crushed berries and citrus zest. While ready to enjoy now for its energy and freshness, this non-vintage cuvée has the concentration and structure to develop additional complexity over 3–5 years in bottle, gaining more autolytic, brioche-like nuances.
Production
Sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in Ambonnay, one of Champagne’s most revered villages for Pinot Noir, this rosé benefits from chalk and limestone-rich soils with excellent drainage and exposure. The blend brings together a high proportion of Chardonnay with a carefully selected portion of still red Pinot Noir produced from old-vine parcels, a choice that emphasizes elegance over heaviness. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve natural acidity and fruit purity. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, with primary fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels and extended aging on the lees to build texture and complexity. A measured addition of red Pinot Noir wine gives the final cuvée its color and gentle tannic structure, and it is bottled with an Extra Brut dosage to showcase the precision of the Grand Cru fruit and the mineral signature of Ambonnay.
Food & Serving
This Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Rosé Extra Brut is a versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with dishes that highlight freshness and subtle richness. Try it with salmon tartare, tuna carpaccio, grilled prawns, or sushi and sashimi, where its acidity and minerality complement the delicacy of the seafood. It also works wonderfully with charcuterie, duck rillettes, roasted poultry, and soft cheeses such as brie or chaource, as well as berry-driven desserts that are not overly sweet. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to allow the aromatics to open gradually. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a short, gentle decant in a chilled carafe can help the wine fully express its red-fruited and floral nuances.
