Description
R.H. Coutier Champagne Grand Cru Bout du Clos Extra Brut 2017 is a finely etched, terroir-driven Champagne from one of Ambonnay’s most respected grower-producers. Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir and sourced from a prized Grand Cru parcel, it marries depth and power with striking precision. This limited cuvée highlights both the character of the 2017 vintage and the unmistakable identity of Ambonnay’s chalky slopes.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne shows a luminous, pale gold hue with subtle copper reflections, crowned by a fine, persistent bead. The nose is expressive yet refined, opening with notes of ripe orchard fruits—think baked pear and yellow apple—layered with wild strawberry, citrus zest, toasted brioche, and a gentle hint of hazelnut and chalky minerality.
On the palate, the Bout du Clos 2017 is incisive and dry, true to its Extra Brut style, yet carries a beautiful, vinous texture from the Pinot Noir. Flavors of red apple skin, blood orange, lemon curd and fresh raspberry are supported by a firm spine of acidity and a pronounced saline, chalk-driven finish. Subtle savoury and pastry nuances add depth as it warms in the glass. While already highly enjoyable now, it has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for another 6–10 years, gaining complexity and creaminess with time in bottle.
Production
Bout du Clos comes from a select Grand Cru parcel in Ambonnay, a village famed for its south-facing slopes and deep chalk and limestone soils that are particularly well-suited to Pinot Noir. The vines draw intensity and finesse from this classic Champagne terroir, with low yields helping to concentrate flavor and structure. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and purity of fruit. In the cellar, R.H. Coutier focuses on gentle pressing and a careful, traditional vinification, typically fermenting in temperature-controlled vessels and allowing an extended period on the lees to build texture and complexity before disgorgement. The Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine’s natural energy and minerality front and center.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is an excellent choice for food-focused occasions, pairing beautifully with dishes such as salmon tartare, tuna crudo, sushi, roasted poultry, veal carpaccio, charcuterie, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and Parmesan. It also works wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes and refined, lightly creamy sauces, where its acidity can cut through richness. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 15–20 minutes in a decanter or in the glass before serving can help the wine open up aromatically, especially if enjoyed in a larger, tulip-shaped Champagne glass rather than a narrow flute.
Producer
R.H. Coutier is a respected grower-producer based in Ambonnay, one of Champagne’s most celebrated Grand Cru villages, particularly renowned for Pinot Noir. The family has been cultivating vines in the village for generations, and their long history in the region has allowed them to build up holdings in some of its finest sites. Known for their commitment to expressing terroir, they craft Champagnes that are characterful, precise and often exceptionally ageworthy. R.H. Coutier has earned a strong following among Champagne enthusiasts for their combination of traditional methods, careful vineyard work, and a focus on authenticity over volume, making their wines a benchmark for serious Ambonnay Champagne.
