Description
Réne Barbier Clos Mogador Com Tu 2022 is a characterful village red from La Figuera in Montsant, made predominantly from Garnacha grown at altitude. Combining Mediterranean warmth with lifted, savoury complexity, it offers a distinctive interpretation of the village’s varied mountain terroir. The traditional-style label, inspired by historic wines such as Viña Tondonia, reflects the wine’s classical, place-driven character.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep, lively red colour. Its nose is notably classical and savoury, opening with hints of smoked bacon and Rhône-like spice, followed by aromatic herbs, dried flowers and a subtle earthy character. The Mediterranean influence is clear, yet the overall impression remains discreet and refined rather than heavy.
On the palate, Com Tu is medium-bodied, with a textured mouthfeel and gently dusty tannins. The balance between ripe fruit, savoury detail and herbal freshness makes it engaging to drink already, while its 18 months of maturation suggest further development in bottle over the medium term.
Production
The Garnacha comes from three high-altitude parcels in La Figuera, where limestone and clay soils contribute structure and mineral freshness. Forty percent of the fruit underwent semi-carbonic maceration, while the remaining 60% was destemmed and given a long maceration to build texture and depth. The wine was matured for 18 months in old foudres and concrete, with 12,800 bottles produced, and was bottled in June 2024.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, around 16–18°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatic detail. It pairs well with roast lamb, grilled pork, charcuterie, herb-seasoned sausages, mushrooms and Mediterranean dishes featuring aubergine or lentils. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help the savoury aromas and textured palate open up, particularly when serving a young bottle.
Producer
Com Tu was originally initiated by Anderson, the youngest son of the Barbier family, and is now continued by his brothers following his move into gastronomy and exploration of a future wine project in Terra Alta. The wine reflects the family’s close connection to Catalonia and their interest in expressing individual villages and parcels. Its new label presents the village itself in a traditional style, reinforcing Com Tu’s identity as a genuine village wine from La Figuera.
