Description
Clos Mogador 2022 in magnum format is the flagship wine of René Barbier and one of the defining reds of Priorat. Sourced from a single historic vineyard, this cuvée combines Mediterranean warmth with striking minerality and precision. Bottled in 1.5 L, it is designed for both serious cellaring and memorable shared occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos Mogador shows a deep, almost opaque garnet core with a vibrant purple rim, signalling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is intensely Mediterranean: wild herbs, dried hay and straw, sun-warmed garrigue and a distinct wet-slate character that is instantly evocative of Priorat’s llicorella soils. Notes of black cherry, ripe plum and mulberry mingle with hints of tapenade, licorice, violets and a subtle smokiness, with oak very much in the background.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a round, flowing texture and very fine, chalky tannins that frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Flavours of dark berry compote, black cherry and damson are layered with savoury accents of dried thyme, fennel seed and graphite. The 14% alcohol is seamlessly integrated, kept in check by a lively 5.4 g/L of acidity and a bone-dry, persistent finish. The 2022 vintage shows no trace of overripeness; instead, it feels serious, harmonious and relaxed, with a more overtly Mediterranean profile than some earlier years. In magnum, this wine has excellent aging potential, easily developing over 12–20 years, gaining further complexity, silkier tannins and more pronounced tertiary notes of leather, tobacco and forest floor.
Production
Clos Mogador is a single-vineyard wine from Priorat, Catalonia, rooted in steep, terraced hillsides of classic llicorella slate that give the wine its trademark mineral backbone. The 2022 is based primarily on Garnacha and Cariñena, supported by smaller proportions of Syrah and an ever-decreasing share of Cabernet Sauvignon as the estate continues to re-graft toward Mediterranean varieties. Grapes are hand-harvested from low-yielding vines and fermented with around 40% whole clusters, contributing aromatic lift and refined tannic structure. Vinification emphasises gentle extraction and elegance rather than power. The wine is then aged for about 20 months in large 2,000–2,500 L oak foudres and older barriques, with some lots finishing their élevage in concrete to preserve freshness and purity. New oak is deliberately kept to a minimum to avoid masking the character of the vineyard, and the final blend was bottled in June 2024.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic red that shines with richly flavoured Mediterranean and Iberian cuisine. Think slow-braised lamb shoulder with rosemary, Catalan-style beef or pork stews, duck with figs, grilled ibérico pork presa, venison, or hearty dishes with wild mushrooms and truffles. It also pairs beautifully with aged Manchego, semi-hard goat cheeses and dishes featuring roasted peppers, aubergine or black olives. Serve at 16–18°C; slightly cool for a powerful red to keep its freshness and balance. In magnum, decanting is recommended: 1–2 hours for younger bottles to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open, and up to 3 hours if enjoyed within its first decade.
Producer
René Barbier is a seminal figure in the modern history of Priorat, widely credited—alongside a small group of pioneers—with resurrecting the region in the late 20th century and showcasing its potential for world-class wines. Clos Mogador, founded in the late 1970s and officially established in the 1980s, was one of Priorat’s original “clos” estates and has become a benchmark for the appellation. Farmed with great attention to its dramatic slate terraces, the estate emphasises low yields, meticulous vineyard work and a move toward larger foudres and less new oak to better express terroir. Over the years, Clos Mogador has earned international acclaim and top scores from leading critics, firmly establishing René Barbier and his family as one of the most influential and respected producers in Catalonia and in the broader world of Mediterranean fine wine.
