Description
Rauzan-Ségla 2009 is a sumptuous expression of Margaux in one of Bordeaux’s great ripe vintages. This 2nd Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) delivers a captivating mix of power, opulence and classic Left Bank elegance. It stands out for its extraordinary aromatic complexity and velvety texture, already deeply rewarding yet still with years of life ahead.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Rauzan-Ségla shows a deep, almost opaque garnet core with a bright, youthful rim. The nose is luxuriant and layered, bursting with Schwarzwald cake, blackberry tart and warm blueberry compote, interwoven with notes of cardamom, candied violets, smoked meats and Chinese five spice, all resting on a subtle bed of dusty earth.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, rich and unapologetically hedonistic, coating the mouth with plush, velvety tannins and densely packed flavors of preserved black fruits. The dark berry core is lifted by exotic spice, floral hints and a savory, smoky nuance that adds real depth. The finish is very long, spicy and persistent, with the structure and concentration to age gracefully for at least another 10–15 years in good cellaring conditions, and likely beyond.
Production
Rauzan-Ségla is rooted in the gravelly, well-drained soils of Margaux in the Médoc, where deep layers of gravel, sand and clay over a limestone subsoil provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyard is tended parcel by parcel, with careful green harvesting and hand selection of bunches at optimal ripeness, particularly important in a warm, generous year like 2009. After meticulous hand-picking, the grapes are sorted and vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing each plot to express its character. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a significant portion new), where it gains polish, complexity and its finely integrated spice notes, before final blending and bottling at the château.
Food & Serving
This 2009 Rauzan-Ségla shines alongside richly flavored dishes: think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with a berry reduction, or slow-braised beef with root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with wild mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes and aged, hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its current stage of evolution, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the aromatics unfurl and soften the tannins, while older, well-cellared bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant to preserve their tertiary nuances.
Producer
Château Rauzan-Ségla, founded in the 17th century, is one of the historic Second Growth estates of the 1855 Classification and a benchmark for the Margaux appellation. Over the past few decades, significant investment and meticulous vineyard and cellar work have propelled the estate back to the very top tier of Bordeaux, consistently rivaling First Growth quality in the best vintages. Owned by the Chanel group since the mid-1990s, Rauzan-Ségla is renowned for crafting wines that combine Margaux’s hallmark finesse and perfume with depth, precision and ageworthy structure, and the 2009 vintage is widely regarded as one of the château’s modern greats.
