Description

Radikon Merlot 1Litro 2010 is a bold, deeply expressive natural red from one of Friuli’s most iconic artisan producers. Bottled in Radikon’s signature 1-liter format, it offers a generous, long-evolving experience that’s made for sharing at the table. This is Merlot as few have tasted it before: unfiltered, uncompromising, and crafted with a dedication to purity that has made Radikon a benchmark in the world of minimal-intervention wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Radikon Merlot shows a dense, dark ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, indicative of both its age and its concentration. The wine opens slowly on the nose, revealing layers of black cherry, ripe plum, and macerated forest berries, wrapped in notes of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, cocoa, leather, and a subtle, earthy spice. With air, more savory dimensions emerge – hints of cedar, dried roses, and a faint balsamic tone. On the palate, this is powerful yet remarkably poised, with a firm, gripping structure and a textural richness that speaks to long skin contact and extended aging. Flavors of dark fruit compote, blackcurrant, and wild blackberry are interwoven with savory notes of cured meat, licorice, and dried Mediterranean herbs. The tannins are abundant but finely grained and integrated, giving the wine a tactile, almost chewy presence, while the bright natural acidity keeps everything lifted and fresh. At this stage, the 2010 is in a beautiful drinking window, but it still has the backbone to develop further complexity over the next 5–8 years if well cellared.

Production
Radikon’s vineyards lie in Oslavia, in the hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia near the Slovenian border, where ponca (marl and sandstone) soils and steep, well-ventilated slopes create ideal conditions for concentrated, characterful grapes. Farming is organic and deeply manual, with low yields and meticulous selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe Merlot bunches are used. The grapes are typically destemmed and given a long maceration on the skins – a hallmark of Radikon’s style – before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large wooden vats. The wine then ages for several years in large neutral oak casks, followed by additional time in bottle, without fining or filtration and with minimal or no added sulfur, preserving maximum texture, aroma, and authenticity.

Food & Serving
This structured, savory Merlot calls for equally full-flavored dishes: think slow-braised beef, lamb shanks, venison, or rich ragù over fresh pasta. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, mushroom risotto, game birds, and truffle-driven dishes, where its earthy nuances really shine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and give the wine a generous decant of at least 1–2 hours to fully open up; in magnum-style 1-liter format and with natural wines like this, patience in the glass is richly rewarded.

Producer
Radikon is a pioneering family estate in Oslavia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, long regarded as one of the key names in the natural wine movement and in the revival of extended skin-contact winemaking in northeastern Italy. Founded by the late Stanko Radikon and now led by his family, the winery helped redefine expectations for both white and red wines from the region, prioritizing organic farming, low yields, and traditional, low-intervention cellar work. Radikon’s distinctive 500 ml and 1-liter bottles, long macerations, and minimal sulfur philosophy have inspired winemakers around the world and secured the estate a cult following among sommeliers and wine lovers seeking authenticity, longevity, and profound character in their wines.
